gas mileage and performance has TANKED !

    Hey guys,
I have been having some major issues with my car lately...ive gone from 390 miles to tank, to 320....and now down to 276 to the light. I had some issues 2 days ago with the coolant temp. at cold the whole time in a 18 mile drive at night....that is impossible.

I am getting like 20-21 Mpg...and acceleration is horrendous as well.
I am planning to do the following tomorrow

    Replace the following :
    - 1 X thermostat
    - 1 X K/N Performance Oil Filter
    - Synthetic oil change
    - Seafoam !!!!
    - add Engine restore.

I also ordered a K/N air filter as well....so cant wait for that.
What do you guys think, will this fix my issues ?? =/

    Thanks !

did you do a valve adjustment?

how are your spark plugs and wires?

        distributor cap and rotor?

        catalytic converter?

        fuel filter?

what's wrong with the temperature sensor?

I would not add any additives into the engine. They don't need it.

          Im having similar problems...

while Im driving....the temp gauge drops to C ( cold )...but while Im idling..it goes back to normal.

          and my gas mileage sucks.

          its a 92 EX auto.

Id suggest...checking the coolant temp sensor. thats more than likely your culprit.

as Im going to check the continuity on mine soon...because Im sitting at 1/8th of a tank and the trip meter is at 239 miles.

I think the coolant temp sensor is bad...and its causing the fuel mileage to suffer.

          check the coolant temp sensor.

Dammmnn look who finally showed up. Check engine light? I dont think the CTS is the problem. Sounds like your thermostat is stuck open or the temperature sending unit is acting up. You running rich? Whats your ignition timing set at? Air fiilter good? tune up? If you are going to check any sensor it should the o2 one mayne.

              yeah..its been a long time coming....IM BACK!

yeah..thats the sensor....temperature sending unit ( to the ECU )..

I think that could be the problem Eugene..

Imma give it a thorough tuneup in a few days...

and see where it stands then.

good call on helping me remember which sensor to look for

and yeah...I had a thought It could be an open stuck thermostat.

              I will keep YOU updated.

              call me.

but to the OP....check the temperature sending unit as Eugene stated!

NOTE: NO CEL ...is it suppose to come on?

              Im not getting any CELs

Start with a valve adjustment if it needs it. Do a full tune up if it aint been done in a while. clean your egr ports like shag said. Check your ignition timing. I'm assuming that your engine running too cool also has a bit to do with it. A new thermostat should fix that.

Kenny, It sound like the gauge problem is most likely your thermo.

When the gauge drops down is how is the heat?

Also you can feel your rad hoses, if they are about the same temp thermo is stuck open.
                  wat?

Before you seafoam, do a tune up and check your oxygen sensor.

your reduction in acceleration and cold engine seems to be symptoms of a rich fuel mixture; which is usually caused by a broken or a carbon covered oxygen sensor. If you still have the original O2 sensor, it should be about time to change it.

let us know what you find.
