    O,my......Premium KILLS?

Guys,it's kinda hilarious and ironic.Last night I was worrying about my ticking sound very much all the time. When I went out to had something to eat later last night,my fuel light went on.The gas price raised a bit last night and I was kinda short on cash.I went to a ESSO,and the preium as had used for like 1 month or so wsa 99.9, I was like and got no other choice but to put regular in my car.Started up my car and go,"o.....what the???where is my ticking sound? huh???lowering my sound a bit maybe,no,still, where is it??!!??!"...............
Today I woke up and went out for a spin since I am off today, still, the ticking sound could not heard or I can say reduced really a lot.And the grinding sound at 2000rpm seems to be lower as well.Weird..............Premium Kills? Any idea guys?

thanx for the reply guys! I was told by the manager of the shop gave premium a try then I started put premiums in it.Before I was using 89 all the time, and slowly it developed a ticking sound,so,I should go back to the bottom 87 then.
      Yeah,several weeks before,the premiums are over 105,Chevron 94 was like 108

i thought that premium would help the motor out by using a better grade fuel and cleaning the injectors and stuff.

some people that i race with will use racing fuel with octane booster.

yeah,I thought like that as well.maybe I use too much premium,I used 94 for like 2 weeks.and then kept feeding 92 to it.I remembered some articles before said premiums are not that good in winter.a........if someone can explain the reason that ticks reduced with 87,that would be great............

if the ticking is getting louder you need to have your valve springs and rocker arms checked to make sure that you don't need an adjustment.

yeah,I was thinking about the adjustment.however, now, the ticking seems to be lighter and reduced.Made me think that I might have used a wrong fuel.

From my understanding, when the higher the octane in fuel...the more resistant it is to combustion. That is why higher compression engines use higher octance (premium) fuel because it will allow the engine to reach full compression before igniting. Lower compression engines running premium fuels would technically ignite a little later then running a low octange gas...so it indirectly kinda retards your timing...I wonder if your engine tries to make up for this by advancing the timing some to minimize this being an issue. I know some cars have this octane sensor that does this exact thing, adjusts the ignition timing accoringly.

yeah, now is getting much better, and the power seems to be back a bit on 87.Yet still, since it's raining for 2 days non-stop.....I could not do the EGR ports.....sighs............

I have heard that premiums can kill a carburator, but for EFIs,I am no so sure.........
Yet it still remains a myst that my ticking reduced with 87.Usually people do believe that higher octane can cure the ticking, pingping sound yet for me,lower one seems to work.Funny,but............

if im not mistaken all this will be linked to your ecu, and what not, what ur car is designed to do. go w/ the recommended octane rating in your manual, as it is what was designed for.

if ur car pings or knocks go one level higher, but it means ur car needs a tune up or something, because it does not make sense at all that a car saying 87 will need anything higher like 89, if u know what i mean. but just a logic type of thing, i dont know wht honda or toyota or any manufacturer would recommend some settings that would screw your car up. so that' just my input.

but to test out, drive on the recommended oct, warm car up, then find an open path and floor your car and listen to the car to see if it pings or knocks,

do the same w/ the 'premium' anything higher than recommended and go from there.
                        hahahahah

i dont know but sounds weird to me, higher octane i get much better gas mileage and my car runs better. my owners manual from 1991 even says 86 octane OR HIGHER. so i dont think using a higher octane hurt the motor at all. i switch off depending on how much $$ i have and i def do notice better mileage and performance (acceleration etc) with higher grades.

I guess maybe something with my timing then.......... Yeah,I have read some posts people said they used premium and the car feel smoother and better milage, yet not for mine...............

well do what works for you ya know. but i def disagree with the statement that using higher grades is not as good. lol its been fine for me and the manual says 86 or higher, it doesnt say 86 and no higher. so i say whatever works for u.
