CEL on startup - rough idle - wont rev past 3500rpm

I wanted to run this past your guys and get a final opinion before I purchase a distributor. I AM NOT able to pull a CEL code with a jumper wire, but the ECU continues to throw a CEL light.

On startup, the CEL comes on, the engine runs rough, and there is not power and pops and sputters near 3500 rpms. Sometimes, a restart resets the CEL and the car runs fine. But, lately it's been happening more and more often and now the car is not reliable. The problems are characteristic of a code 8 cel TDC sensor (crank position sensor) but I need some input.

    Thanks guys...

    i'd check the ecu first

swapping it out would be easier and i'm sure someone would sell you one cheap or let you borrow one, etc

    computers do go bad sometimes
....and on the 7th day, deevergote rested and called his mom.

      X2

If that does not work , swap another distributor in. That's where the sensors are.

crack the guts open and see if you spot any burnt resistors.

well I swapped out the ECU and for a while the car was not throwing an CELs, but was still sluggish on start-up and missing under load at WOT. Now, I am getting a random CEL again and no code.

I jumper the blue plug on the passenger front kick right?

            yes..use a paperclip

turn the key to on..NOT start.

            and count the blinks.

one short ( first number )...

            fast blinks..( second numbers )

if it stays lit...no blinking...( bad ECU )

NOTE: Unbend the paperclip..so it makes a U shape..stick it between the metal contacts inside the jumper....then, turn key to on...it will blink codes if theres anything wrong.

            its all ignition issues.

            keep up posted.

NOW..you said..TDC sensor...check the connectors..and wires. or that sensor is probably bad.

            CHECK YOUR TIMING!!!!!

Report back what CEL codes you get, that would be helpful. If the CEL light comes on and stays on, then you have code "0", which is bad ECU.

Just had this happen to a coworker with 92 EX coupe auto. He was having idle issues as well, hesitations, etc.

I have also had 3500 RPM max engine capability issues when you are running on 3 cylinders (1 fuel injector disconnected). CEL stays on then and you can only rev to 3500 RPM. So this tells me it goes into limp mode, which is probably what is occurring to you and signs of a bad ECU (if nothing else is wrong).
