can anybody help my vss/speedo problem...

ok, so about a month ago I did a swap and took it for a spin...well when I was test driving it the arm that sticks out the vss to mount on the tranny broke...so I went to the jy to get another one but I just put my top electronic part on the vss on the bottom part of the jy vss. After installing it my speedo wasn't working...so I asumed maybe my little electronic sensor coincidentally broke as well...so a freind took his off and we installed his entire vss on and still nothing...

well we went and did some research (<link) to find out what the wires should read out and found that black (of course) goes to ground, the middle (yellow/blue) should have 5v and the yellow/white is signal...but the yellow/white just has a constant voltage reading when we spin the wheels...I'm thinking thats my problem...that it shouldn't read a constant voltage, it should go from 0v to 5v to 0v to 5v...and so on...when we spin the wheel...

we even wired the wires straight to the ecu to make sure there wasnt a break somewhere in the harness...but nothing is working...

everything was working untill the mount on the vss broke...I am so clueless...

I was wondering if any body has any clue how to check (if I'm correct) why the signal wire just has a constant reading....

or if anybody had the same problem...

when you swapped the top electronic part, you made sure the little pin inside between the two was still there right? Without that, the bottom part will spin, but will give no reading to the electronic top piece since that pin is what transfers the reading to the speedo.

You should've just swapped your friends entire VSS onto your car. You might have a bad VSS, you did say it came from the JY, so its a possibility that it could be bad.

I would swap a working VSS on there, or just use your friends entire VSS and see what happens.

My VSS mount broke too...I just stuck the VSS in there and it's been fine ever since, lol.

Try another working VSS, or take the top part off, and check to make sure the pin is there. You've already been given the advice, now follow it.

You seem to have covered all the usual stuff, so no responses.

You checked the reference voltage: 12V-13.1V, right?
You checked for a good connection to ground, right?
You checked the VSS signal, but I think the frequency at which it switches between 0V and 5V should be too fast to be seen on an analog meter. Use an osciliscope. I have used osciliscopes to capture the micro-bounce all mechanical switches encounter, and that is on the order of a milisecond.

Swap your buddy's VSS back in and see if your Gauge Cluster is receiving the VSS Signal. If it is easier, do this at the Cruise Control Unit; both use the same signal.

You could have a broke gear inside the tranny......

OK, I can difinitely see that the signal voltage frequency is too fast for a volt meter...I don't have an oscilliscope and don't know anybody that does...

Also another clue I have that I know I'm not getting anything from the vss is that when I got my chipped ecu, I got that 2-step launch control program on the chip...so I know my speedo isn't moving because my ecu isn't getting a signal from the vss...otherwise I wold be able to rev past 4,000rpm (thats where I got my 2-step LC set at)...

And to rule that its not the chip itself out, my friend let me use his chip from his p28 and still nothing....

Well, everytime I take the vss out I can see the gears that spin the vss...so I doubt its that...also if that broke it would probably mess other things inside the tranny...and when I look down I don't see the gears chipped or anything...

I took it apart and did see a little pin that spins the actual senser....I've done everything I can do...

                            Broken Wire Harness?

You should also check for an open in the connection between the VSS and the ECU, Cruise Control, and Gauges.

the good question is are you getting a check engine light? if not then the problem is between the ecu and the cluster. Most commonly from what i have found repairing vss problems is that there is corrosion on the contacts of the wires because it is directly underneith the coolant hose and occasionally gets dripped on. I would suggest cutting and splicing a new connector on there. You can also trace each wire through the harness. Checking for pulse width... 0,5,0,5 is pretty much worthless on most meters because they are not fast enough to catch the switch and will usually show the power but not the off signal. you are better off checking for resistance and open circuits. you can check between the vss sensor and the connector at the top of the right shock tower. if good there then check from that point to ecu.
