Oil or something leaking from timming belt area?

Well my car leaks oil and a while ago i got under the car and looked where it was comming from. I found this picture of an engine on ebay and i circles where theres always oil or something comming out of. I whip it off and theres more oil that leaks. also i think my oil pan gasket is gone but thats becides the point.

What is leaking from this circled area? If anyone knows let me know. also how can you take off the timming belt cover.

It could be your camshaft seal, however the only way to check it is to take off the valve cover.

    Look at this thread: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthre...light=camshaft

I see you, replied to that thread too, have you ruled this out yet?

Correct, once you remove the valve cover, and those bolts on the side, you'll be able to remove the the top timing belt cover.

What you'll be looking for is oil on that seal, you'll probably see it on the bottom if it's a small leak. You should also see the path that the oil is taking, it usually goes behind (head-side) #4 and onto the block sparing the timing and balance belts.

        Here is a pic:

        the camshaft seal is 30

balance shaft seal man... not camshaft... what the F-series motors do is most of the times they build up too much oil pressure and they usually pop the balance shaft seal out and oil leaks everywhere.. honda dealership recommends all F-series engines that come in have to put on a balance shaft hold down type deal.. they are ~$15 at the dealer if you want to get one.. it bolts on and its like a C-clamp type deal and it holds 2 opposite sizes of the seal down.. just what i beleive it is... all F-series have this problem.... thats why your oil pan gasket is probably leaking.. too much pressure inside.... i dunno why it happens but it IS a re-call on those engines... hope that helps

looking at the front of the engine with the timing cover off, you'll see two belts. One goes the entire height of the engine to the cam from the crank; that one's the timing belt. The other one that is more horizontal than vertical that goes to a tensioner on the right and a gear on the left; behind the gear is the balance shaft seal and balance shaft.

The balance shaft seal failed on my car and oil literally poured out from the bottom of the timing cover. The balance shaft seal has a TSB for our cars but for the 94-up engines it has a recall with a retainer clip. Use a liberal amount of Hondabond in place of the clip if you cannot acquire one.

There's several threads floating around on this topic.

While you're there replacing the balance shaft seal, you may as well replace both timing and balance shaft belts, cam and crank seals, lower timing cover (when they are saturated with oil they swell up, sometimes making contact with the accessory belts), accessory belts, and replace the engine mount at the front of the engine where the belts are if need too while you're at it.

My money is still on the camshaft seal because the balance shaft seal is located forward and to the left of the crankshaft and to the right of the dipstick. The area of the leak that you specified is in the rear and upper portion of the engine. I'm hoping that it's not the balance shaft seal because if it is, chances are you'll need a new timing belt and balance belts well as stated below.

Here is a good site on the balance shaft: http://www.cybertrails.com/~puf/Hond...meBalNote.html

I think all cb7’s are notorious for this….so have we figured it out yet, cam seal or balance shaft seal???
I need to fix mines, I hate the way it looks, I really notice all the oil dripping down the side/back of the motor when I was under the car over the weekend, u can see it leaking from the top but u really notice it once under the vehicle looking at the rear of the motor.
And its only in that area, the mid/other side of the motors dry.

and yeah mines is in the rear at the top behind the cam gear.....around there somewhere. same as his picture

So what did it end up being? Cam Seal or Balance Shaft seal?

I have just incurred a very similar leak a few days ago. Oil literally pours out from the bottom of the timing belt cover. TIA

cam seal. go get you timing belt and balance betls replaced and honda will throw on a cam seal retainer so that doesnt happen again. most shops have a timing belt "package".

ther is an o ring on your oil driven gear. the o ring is called "balancer shaft o ring."
