    Manually shifting an auto trans.

Hi, i've always wondered if manually shifting a cb7 auto tranny (1-2-d3-d4) can be damageable for the transmission???

    Thanks

As a general rule, yes. Unless you have some insane tranny fluid and a shift kit I believe

It's not recommended as sometimes it will gear hunt.

Well you can do it, just dont do it all the time

Upshifting isnt really too bad but down shifting can be a bit hard when done all the time

Ill down shift my auto if im on a steep hill and feel that 2nd gear will give me more power without having to floor it to get into 2nd gear from D4. Just dont drive around like its a manual.

its in the original owners manual. it says that it can be done, and it goes on to explain how to do it. search my posts.. i posted the entire cb7 owners manual recently, straight from honda in pdf format

ps. i do it all the time. in the manual it specifies that at higher speeds you should avoid shifting too low (duh) because "it can push the engine over the redline"

[edit] like was mentioned earlier, its not recommended to drive your auto like its a manual, but for quick takeoffs you can start in 1st and work your way up, or drop from D4 to D3 for more acceleration uphill etc.

even if it did not cause additional wear...which it does...YOU will never shift as quickly nor as efficiently as the TCU...unless the TCU is damaged.

and it will shift the car at/around peak hp rpm...the 00 accord does anyway.

most all automatic transmission in the last 30years are all designed to be manually shifted, if you read any owners manual it will tell you how to use the gears for hills, icy and snow conditions and towing . and it does not cause additional wear.......... heck the first auto trans honda had in the accord had to be manually shifted...........

I know about that. it isnt the goal at all. I just wanted to know if downshifting in big hills was good or bad. I want to save my brakes.

I roll in a highway exit everyday and its downhill a lot. At the end witch is near, i need to stop. thats why.

IMO Brakes < Transmission. Brake pads cost nothing on our cars...transmissions on the other hand mucho dinero.
