My odometer is going out on me. It works when it feels like it. Has anybody else had this prob? And how can I fix it??

its the VSS, Vehicle Speed Sensor. There are some on ebay for 40 bucks(there were, might not be anymore), or they are around 90 from dealer/autozone. It is located on top of the transmission, and has 2 screws. It is prolly that or it could be a plastic gear in the tranny. But its prolly that, its in a pretty tight space, but take out a few things, and it shouldnt be hard to DIY

Yes, the Odo gets it's signal from the VSS, but it will throw a code at you too.

thanx for the quick replies guys. i'm not throwing any codes tho, so I guess I just need a new cluster? everything else works fine, speed, revs, temp, gas, etc.

well i had the problem for a year and a half... most of the time i didnt have a spedometer. Everything else worked fine. And out of that whole time, it only threw a code maybe 20-30 times in a whole year. But mine would just drop to zero, and then sometimes kick back in once in a while. And it got worse and worse over like a few months, and then died

is it faster you go = higher the voltage, or is the VSS the thing that produces the 12v pulses?

I remember reading on another fourm that somebody had a simmilar issue... turned out that all they had to do was press the "mantaince required" reset button a couple times and the problem was solved... you could try that before swapping parts...
