    smoke

last night while I doing a test drive on the car after replacing the plug wires i noticed smoke coming from behind the block under the intake manifold. I can't tell for sure where it's coming from but it's there. Also there seems to be an unusual amount of white smoke coming from the tail pipe I thought it was maybe condensation but it just seems like too much to be just that(all this while engine is running). Also I noticed smoke coming from where the oil cap goes (only when the engine is off). What could it be? I see nothing leaking but it smells like burning oil. Also my temp gauge still reads nothing so theres no way to know weather it's overheating or not. I checked the oil and there's no water/coolant in it seems normal. Same with coolant no oil seems normal. Also the smoke seems to start clearing when I stop driving. Don't know what else to look for or where to go from here I'm just stumped.

    Any ideas?

i would do a compression test, sounds like your headgasket is on its way out.

if you have the A6 engine, a problem I had was the oil cooler O ring was bad and would drip oil on the downpipe when at red lights.

Its located just behind the oil filter so pretty much in the general area of where you thing the smoke is coming from

Id check that o ring as mentioned or if you do have a valve cover leak that is bad enough it could be dripping oil onto the exhaust manifold.

Yeah I have an A6 and that's where the smoke is coming from. Still doesn't explain the smoke coming from the tail pipe and is it normal for it to smoke a tini bit from the oil cap after I turn the car off because I don't notice it when it's running and I remove the cap to check it. Also I changed all the filters and the oil a few days ago. When I removed the oil filter it spilled all over the back of the block and on the exhaust but I just figure too many days have passed for it to still be generating smoke from that. I mean I don't drive it much but I do turn it on everyday and take it out for a spin do you think it could just be some oil that hasn't burned all the way yet?

I'm going to get it looked at today. Just want to see some opinions.

If its coming out of the tail pipe and out of your oil cap you probably have a more serious problem than you think...Id start out with a compression test for each cylinder. Sounds like rings can be slowly going out or valve stem seals arent good. You might want to see if your pcv is working properly.

had it looked at and the mechanic said not to worry that the smoke was most likely from the spill during the oil change and that the tailpipe smoke was condensation from sitting too long. Said there was some oil seepage but nothing to worry about.

so shouldn't be a problem thanks!

white smoke is usually means that your car is burning coolant or water.

if it smells kind of sweet from your tail pipe then yip its coolant.

also if there is white smoke coming from where you fill up the oil then you might want to check the oil and if its creamy in colour then yip could be a head gasket.

Well if you have a cat it will be condensation. It happens when its cold. White smoke doesnt always mean burning coolant whch would smell sweet as you say.
