Oil POURING from lower timing cover!

Today i took my car to the stop and shop near me maybe 5 miles round trip. When i got home i backed in and relized i was literally pouring oil on the ground. I can follow the trail that starts around a half mile before the store and goes all the way home. I got a friend to help and found that it appears to be coming from above the oil pan on the timing belt side, and behind the cover. I think its the crankshaft oil seal. I looked into replacing it and its alot of work. Im only four (4) months away from my h22 swap. Im lookin for some input i didnt want to do this much work to this motor. Im not sure what to do.

    What are your opinions ?

Just wait 4 months. But if you need the car you gotta do what you gotta do though.

Precisely. And since it's leaking behind the timing belt cover, the timing belt is surely covered in oil... so that's done as well.

This isn't going to be a terribly cheap fix. Fortunately, it sounds like you didn't let it run dry, so hopefully you didn't damage the motor. If it happened on the highway, you'd be boned.

              Your options are:
              1) put a few hundred bucks and a weekend into fixing this motor
              2) buy the H22 now
              3) Park your car and walk, bike, or drive something else for the next 4 months.

I found a 90 dx with around 65k on it. For like $250. I think this might be easier for me to just swap it out. I know i can do that in one long day. Or just drive that for now.

Swapping an entire engine is easier than changing one seal?

I guess if he doesnt want to mess with timing and all that which most people don't. I have thought about doing it to some cars I have worked on.

No i dont really want to mess with the timming. I might try to drive the car for the time being. Im going to look at it tomorrow. I cant beat it for $200. It could also buy me some more time to clean up the whole h swap. Im not very comfertable with redoing all the timming and gears. Its around the same cost.

just pop the balance shaft belt off, change the seal and leave the balance shaft belt off.

you'll gain .5hp while youre at it and you wont need to do any timing!

Ill take alook at that idea when i have time. I found a h22 for $600 that i want to grab and use with my tranny till i find one and do the 5speed swap. I dont remember exactly if i can use my ecu as an emergency till i find an auto ecu for the h. For now ill look at this balance shaft belt idea.

You can use your ECU with the H22, yes... just don't beat on it. It won't be right, but it will run, and it will do no damage if you're gentle (and don't run it for a long time... a couple weeks tops, I'd say.)

Keep in mind, a cheap H22 may end up costing you more in the long run than a more expensive one, if it's not in good condition. Definitely change the timing belt, water pump, and all seals on it before you install it... or you may end up in the same situation you're in now (only $600 poorer!)
