I have a 90 automatic that when you put it into reverse it doesn't engage it just makes a buzzing sound. It kind of sounds like putting a piece of paper over a fan blade when it is running. Any ideas what I could check?

Does it engage in drive? If it doesn't engage in drive and does the same thing, then check your CV joints to see if one's come apart.
If it's reverse only that does it, I hate to tell you, but I think the transmission is probably buggered.

it engages all other gears. sometimes a hard shift in d4 going from 3rd to 4th...sometime it will buzz and kinda move in reverse but nothing like it should

your shift cable is probably coming undone or is gummed up w/ grease/oil/matter and not working properly.
Check underneath your tranny where the cable goes in. You'll have to remove an access cover w/ a couple 10mm bolts and you should be able to see if its still screwed into where it needs to be on the transmission
