Electrical problem.

So, Driving the last night, turn my lights on, no dash lights (cluster).
I have a flip out screen in my car. When I turn the lights on, the screen turns grey and has all kinds of colored lines on it. Its still on, but does nothing. Turn the lights off, and it works fine. Pulling up to my buddies house, we notice smoke coming from the steering column cover. I pulled it off today, and there seems to be no corrosion, burnt wires, etc. I have no idea how to work with electrical things at all. I NEED HELP! Im completely stumped on this, and I cant drive my car at night.

is the illumination wire hooked up to the deck? Your dimmer switch could be bad.

Who hooked up your deck? Sounds like they spliced into the wrong switched power source...

I did. I know how to wire that. Decks been in there for about two weeks.

Did you use the OEM harness with an adapter, or did you cut the harness?

My harness has been cut since I got the car, so my radio is hard wired in, correctly. Using the factory wiring diagram. I think the radio is irrelevant, and it has something to do with the light lever, or whatever its called.

Just go to the jy, and grab another dimmer switch

Junkyard is 50+ miles away. Do you even know what your talking about? I mean, would you drive your car 50+ miles while its smoking and not 100% sure what the problem is?

You said you cluster lights were out, are the climate control lights out as well? If so, it's the dimmer switch.

Its just the cluster lights. they headlights seem to be not as bright either. Brand new alternator, and battery as well.
