    Speedo needle bouncing

Just went out for breakfast this morning and started to drive down my road and my speedo needle started bouncing erratically all over the place. While at a constant speed, it shows correct, and the odometer works correctly, under acceleration or coasting, the needle goes haywire.

I even came to a complete stop and the needle was bouncing around and my odometer was still counting while stopped.

Now, I've had issues with this cluster, where my fuel & temp gauges are not working, and now this. Is it VSS related, or maybe just the cluster? Or something else?

Hate to say it Mikey, pull your cluster AGAIN, this time look for damage like this:

And COULD also be your VSS, check and make sure the plug is on snug.

Fuck this cluster. I have a new automatic cluster sitting in the garage, but I need to swap guts because the plugs aren't compatible.

I fiddled with the VSS plug, everything is clean, tight and seems okay.

Probably the cluster is my issue....I hope.

Weird why it would start doing it now. I guess the troubleshooting begins shortly. FML, I hate electrical issues like this.

It's a base model, there's not supposed to be things to go wrong!

Seem to have fixed it. I don't know what I did, but I drove like 20 miles and it seems to be good as new.

I pulled the cluster out and tried to swap the guts from my spare cluster. Yeah, no dice. The other cluster I have is a 93 Nippon Denso. NOTHING is compatible between the 2 clusters. I Put mine back together and all of a sudden it magically works fine.

I also called the parts store for a price on a VSS. $181 and I was like "lololol toodaloo."

Got a laugh out of this haha. If your cluster has given you this much trouble I would just grab another out of the yard as oppose to having an auto cluster in a five speed car. But I will say I am glad to hear its working well now. The mustang I used to have would only read up to about fifty and the needle would go straight to the peg and stay there so I never had any clue how fast I was going on the highway

Well, the yard that I would get a cluster from has crushed all of the CB's there. I snagged the last cluster and it's a Nippon Denso from a 93 and completely incompatible with my car. I can get a cluster from that yard for $25.

There's another yard in town that has 2, but they want $75 each. I'd rather wait for the other yard to get some more CB's in and keep the extra $50 in my pocket.

Honestly I dont blame you one bit. They can keep those clusters for a bullshit price like that.

wear big pants .. mine was doing the same thing when I pulled my amps and head unit out..went a couple months, put the beats back in and it worked.. maybe one of your plugs just wasnt seated right and taking it out and replacing it got everything cozy with eachother

After swapping out 4-5 VSS' I just manned up and bought a new one from Checker for 90 bucks. Took care of my problem completely. I was experiencing the same bouncing speedo deal, and then all of a sudden it just died.

I tried the dielectric grease, that helped for a little bit but then it came back. I guess after 20 yrs all the electronic components are starting to fail. The AZ heat sure doesn't help either.

I'll grab a JY one maybe, but there's no effing way I'm paying almost $200 for a VSS. And that's from the CHEAP parts store in town.

Anywhoo, issue seems corrected for now, so, we'll just leave it as is.

Still need a new cluster for the fuel & temp gauges though, but I've been going almost 2 months so far without them.

The VSS i got off of ebay almost 5 years ago is still working fine besides the issue when the stereo came out 200 bucks..damn sounds like its almost the whole assembly that plugs into the transmission.. Top of the list 8 bucks and free shipping up to 25 bucks which if I recall was about what I paid

Mine did that but it would jump to 40mph to 80pmh. I grabbed some from the junkyard and two years past. No issue. Just make sure when you install VSS sensor to install the needle. Lol I learned the hard way.
