    Possible Thermostat Problem

    Hello,
so im sitting at the drive thru at McDonalds when all of a sudden my coolant temp starts creeping up to H i let it get almost to red before i said enough is enough. I quickly pulled out of the line to head toward a parking spot when suddenly the temp shot down to norm and after i parked i let it idle for about a min and it started slowly creeping up. when i got home i pulled the red tab on the rad cap and it hissed for about 5 secs with a bubbling noise in the resivour. after it cooled i took the rad cap off and i could not see any coolant so i filled it up and drove around the parking lot of my apartment. My friend thinks the thermo is sticking closed. is that it?

That's usually a sign of a failing water pump.

now i hope this helps... i did change a hose on the block a little while ago (about a month) and i did not bleed the system. I just filled it with coolant and ran it to see if it would go down. it did not so i drove. a week later it was about to overheat so i popped the top on the rad cap and air hissed out and everything went back to normal

Bleed the coolant system, if it still does it, I would look at that cheap master pro pump.

                  ok will do!

now i do have a couple more questions. Is the coolant level droping because of the air in the system? and also it seems like there is alot of air in the system from just changing the hose on the block.

last one: should i still change the thermo?

Follow this video to bleed the system properly:

Yes the coolant level can look low because of air in the system. Are you noticing coolant leaks? Are you blowing white smoke in the morning at startup?

No, I would not change the thermostat yet.

No sir, no leaks and no smoke. Just hissing when i pop the rad cap and then the coolant is low after. I really am very grateful for you time and i will bleed the crap out of the coolant this weekend!

Not a problem, that's what we are here for.

                          one more question lol

it seems to me like there is a lot of air in the system. how much can really be in there from replacing that hose next to the EGR?

Depends on how much leaked out. Depends on if it was low in the first place.

I would replace the thermostat. I had this problem about 3 months ago. Replaced the thermostat then bled the system, There is a screw on top of the thermostat housing and all is fine now.
It could be the water pump. But its A LOT easier to replace the thermostat than it is to replace the water pump.
Also which hose did you change? I ask because I changed my hoses once before and they didn't have the coolant bypass hose( the u shaped hose behind the thermostat. So I just used a piece of straight hose and made a U and it kinked and caused the car to run warm.
