    Spal Fan install

Well my rad started leaking. So I had to do a warranty exchnage. I had planned on a flush and fill and had the flush in. I had to go exchange the radiator.

So with the rad out I thought I would just install the 12in spal fans I have.
They seem to pull a lot of amperage and drop my volts a lot. Like 14.2 to 13.5

I admit I didn't do any reasearch on this just thought I could stick them in and they would work off the stock wiring and relay. Something tells my I'm wrong.

Any body have any input on what I need to do.

That sounds normal. Those fans flow a lot of cfm if I remember correctly. As long as you aren't blowing fuses.

It did blow a fuse Just one.

Can I just use any relay? Or do I nee to use the spal specific one?

My understanding is. TO wire a relay power comes in to relay. relay then activates and gets power from battery. and it is grounded. That about correct?

Basically I am using the relay with bigger wire to get the power and all the stock wiring does is activate the relay?

So I should need a 60 amp relay and some 10-8ga power wire correct? So any SPdt relay of 60 amp should work. And I can wire them both this way? and the functioning will remain pretty much stock

      thanks

Relay has ground, power in, power out, and trigger basically. So you ground the relay, power to your spal fan, power to your relay from your battery, and old power supply to old fan to trigger.

Use 12g to wire it and you should be good to go.

The low current side is grounded, not the high current. Just to clarify. A relay uses a smaller current to switch a larger current. How many amps is the stock relay rated to? You could upgrade the wire, then up the fuse rating.

I just looked at the current ratings of some of the fans, the max draw is about 22A per fan...impressive. So in short:

Use the stock wire for the relay control signal

Use the heavy gauge wire for fan power. You can run both fans off of one relay. It's similar to wiring up an amplifier if you have done that before.

That's what I was thinking. I ordered a spal relay which may be overkill but from what I read I would need to upgrade by the ground and power wire in the normal 30/40 relay.

I called spal and they said the frh kit would suffice. I ordered two relay kits I would like to retain most of the stock function of the two fans. Ie rad separate of a and a and rad fan on when a is activated.

This is mainly to get more airflow over the condensor so the ac will cool faster. I may at a later date drop down to a smaller amperage slim fan on the rad side because I am assuming two of these will be a hit to the system

My plan is to retain the stock wiring and have positive trip the relay get the power from the bat fused with a 30 amp fuse
            Sound about right?

Thanks for both of your input

I would retain the stock fuse size but up the guage of wires to the fan. Or down I guess, bigger wires will lower the amperage draw at the fuse and let more voltage flow.

Bigger wires won't do that. He won't be able to retain the stock fuse size if he keeps blowing them.

It scares me every time you say ground to chassis because I'm thinking that you're hooking the high current switch to ground lol.

85 and 86 are your coil terminals, polarity doesn't matter here.
30 is common. I would connect this to your fans positive wire.
87 is Normally Open. You can connect that to the battery directly with an inline fuse or to your upgraded wire from the fuse box.

Wire from the battery fused to the 30
Wire from the spal fan to 87
Wire from chassis ground to 86
The stock wire that was going to the OEM fan to 85

That is what I planned on doing. Is that not correct?

So basically power comes in from stock wiring to trigger realy on 85
gets power from 30, 87 then sends power to the spal fan.

And bigger wires will limit the voltage drop and stress on the charging system will it not. Isn't that the purpose of the big 3

                    That's it, exactly.

Bigger wires will reduce voltage drop, but it is really noticeable when you're drawing alot of current ~100A. Anything less than 30A doesn't need anymore than 12 Ga. esp if they are short runs of wire.

I should've have been more specific. Bigger wires will not lower the amperage draw. It will, however, allow more current to flow because the voltage at your device is higher.
