Our engines are interference engines, which means if the timing belt breaks, the valves will come into contact with something else(not sure) and most likely damage will occur. someone who knows more wll chime in soon...

My moms CB7s timing belt went out on the freeway, had to get towed to dealership. They looked it over and said it was all good. HAH. Week later, car is barely running and its running ROUGH. Take it back down there, "oh yeah! you need some new valves." Get that done, they say now its good to go. HAH again. Same problems, irratic idling and general engine trouble. Take it back to the honda dealership for the third time, my dad was furiously yelling. They put on a brand new head for free. Now it runs fine. Next time a timing belt snaps, the fucking car will get sold...

That kind of mentality is just plain ignorance. How about just changing the belt at the recomended intervals, then you don't have to worry about it. But to answer the original question, if it breaks, plan on spending a couple grand on having the head pulled off and rebuilt because the valves WILL be bent.

Some should get a good diy on the timing belt

Great achievements result from great effort

Damn, I just did my timing belt/water pump/balance shaft belt. I should have taken pics for a DIY. But the Haynes manual does explain it good. Like the others said, the valves will get bent MOST of the time. Some people are lucky because they were going slow but that's usually not the case. If I did blow up my engine some how, I'd usually opt for a good used engine rather than rebuilding the blown motor. Good wreckers will provide mileage, compresion test results, and a warranty.

For a quick engine removal, I have a method that works great for 3rd gens. I'm not 100% sure how well it would work for the 4th gens but I don't see why it wouldn't work. But with hydro clutch and stuff like that in the 4th gen (where as the 3rd gens still use cable clutch), it'll definetly take longer on the 4th gen. A good manual to explain what needs to be removed/unplugged before hand is a must. http://www.3geez.com/showthread.php?t=7316

Was it an el cheapo belt? Did you over rev the engine by downshifting into the wrong gear to cause the valves to smack? Or did the same people that worked on your head, do your timing belt and not do a proper job on this as well?

I just find it weird that a new belt snapped, something has to be up. Was the new belt checked for cuts, dry rotting for storage, etc? It could be something as stupid as timing belts coming in a box and an idiot uses a box knife to cut them open, slitting some timing belts in the process and yours may have been on (just an example, not necessarily true).

Or they could get a good condition junkyard head and just slap it on...maybe replace seals if they really want to do it up and even do a valve job, prolly all for less than 2 grand. Depends on how well of a job they want to do.
