    Egr Clogged

F22A1 I'm having sputtering under light acceleration and city driving I've narrowed it down to the EGR system I need some help figuring it out though. When I unplug the EGR connection it still sputters til the CEL comes on but if I unplug the EGR valve hose before the CEL comes on it all goes away. So does that exactly mean that my EGR ports need cleaning or could I be totally off on this diagnoses?

Would prefer someone's opinion by Wednesday rofl because regardless ima clean the EGR ports then.

Sad faces! No reply out of 20 people like none of yall had absolutely no EGR related problems! Regardless going to clean the EGR ports already cleaned the valve.

I just blocked it off with a plate thin enough to sandwich between the manifold and egr valve. it was a horrible misfire in town cruising. after it was so much better. cleaning will help, but itll have to be done probably every timing belt service. if i went that route id drill out the ports, and tap them for allen head caps, and put teflon on the threads, for ease of service. there will be a lot of crap in the runners too from the egr system.

Woo thank you Erik for your reply! so would I still pass inspection-emissions with it blocked off? I'd prefer to clean it but I don't want to dump a bunch of shit into the runners ether. So what would you suggest and how do I block it off without causing CEL light?

No problem..I dont know as I dont have to worry about emissions..it might if everything else is up to par. Cleaning is a lot more involved than just using magic juice on it, youll need to use a slide hammer to pop the caps out and use brushes, picks whatever implement is available to bust up the coke and use carb cleaner (and a vacuum) to get it out, and thats only taking care of the little ports cast into the manifold (why i was talking about tapping and threaded plugs)the runners on the manifold and probably the head ports will be all coked up too. Block it off with a thin plate, you could even make one from like a soda can or something, and just sandwich it between the egr valve and manifold, and leave everything hooked up..it might throw a cel once in a while. I deleted the H's EGR by using a thick block off plate thats on the manifold, kept everything electrically plugged in with no vac connections and jammed a broken plastic cowl "rivet" into the egr valve so it sits half "open" (ecu sees the egr valve has lift) hasnt thrown a cel yet, but its only temporary till I get a chipped ecu that has egr deleted.

idk if it was a crazy good idea or not, but when i did my 99 passport's egr cleaning i just put some sea foam deep creep in it, let it sit for 10 mins or so then hooked my air compressor with a straight through nipple to push full air pressure and it filled the spot on the manifold and pushed everything out the exhaust, repeated a few times, havent had an issue since

good idea, im not sure though if itll get *all* or as much of the crap out of the passage, your way probably got them flowingwell enough again, but the walls still have stuff on them like an artery with plaque buildup. All the passages need to have as much equal flow as you can get, or one cylinder will get too much exhaust and run super rich to the point of it misfiring and thats no good. Also some chunks of that super hard shit could possibly get jammed in the intake valves, if you have a cat, itll get trapped there and might even mess up the honeycomb (imagine a super hot dense chunk of carbon melting its way in to the comb from sitting there in the exhaust flow)

the best way to do this is take off the intake manifold but who has time for that.

the 2nd best in non emissions areas would to block it off if you cant clean it.

Supposedly when the egr is "functioning" but not active you will have a very lean condition as the ecu is expecting the exhaust gasses to richen up the mixture. I would think with a working o2 sensor this wouldnt be a drastic problem.

either way if the egr clogged you can expect the intake port in the head to be velvet lined and the backside of the intake valves to have a big turd sitting on them. Best case for *me* would be to clean the egr passages the easiest and best i could, then some engine interior steam treatment (spray water into intake holding 1500-2000 revs after its completely warmed up) and hope for the best..if theres no bogging then job well done. or block it off have no bog and ngaf.

So I just blocked off my EGR valve with a thick piece of metal and I am getting a horribly rough idle... Is this supposed to happen? I mean I'd like to block it off but engine cold or hot horrible idle and take off as in bogging.

clean your egr valve with carb cleaner, spray it in there and slosh it around till it runs clear. Clean out the idle air control valve doing the same thing. Then clean the 4 egr ports. Those are more than likely what your problem really is. It doesnt take long. It took me maybe 2 hours. Made my car run alot better

the deep creep stuff works way better

The question that I'm mainly concerned about now is. Why did the block off plate cause such rough idle and bogging?

its gotta be air tight..sounds like it was leaking (big vac leak)

use a good gasket or some silicon to seal it up

Throttle body cleaner works just as well as deep creep. Just be mindful that throttle body cleaner eats anything plastic or rubber. Found that out the hard way.
