      The only issue I foresaw there was the fact that the washers would be offset. Further away from the door. Could create issues. Maybe not.

      Worth a shot. I'll try that. If that fails, it's time for a new door.

        i was thinking the same thing, but the door skin is pretty thin metal so the difference will be no more than the thickness of the sheet metal. I think that's within a reasonable range that it should work well. You may even luck out and find that the rest of the regulator rests against areas that still have metal, and the regulator may actually end up sitting in the original spot anyway. Then tightening the bolts would pull the washer in closer, done.
