    Proper way to reset idle

I did a search and have read many different suggestions on other sites, and thought I'd ask here now.

Initially I reset mine after cleaning the throttle body and IACV, and now the idle lopes (surges) at stoplights, but only once in a while. I thought about replacing the IACI did a search and have read many different suggestions on other sites, and thought I'd ask here now.

So, what is the best way to reset the idle on a CB7? When I did mine initially, I had everything connected and the engine warmed up. On Honda-tech, someone suggested that the screw on the throttle body should only be adjusted with the IACV disconnected (btw does this mean off the engine, or with the hoses disconnected). With the IACV disconnected, they said to set the idle to 600 +/- 50. Afterwards, reset ECU.

What is the current thought around here?, but also thought that resting the idle the proper way might be easier (and cheaper).

now a few of the others will know this better than I will but i believe you can leave the IAC intact... you just adjust with the adjustment screw on the throttle body...

hey bro this is what you should do I had this problem awhile back didnt know what to do either. But take the iacv off gently, you see that there are two holes which you can see through take a toothbrush and clean the wire mesh thats on there gently dont pake it too hard. It should be black in there it should be a nice clean silver meaning its nice and clean. That can cause the surging idle that shits a pain in the ass.

That's what I did, which raised the idle a bit. it was set at about 600, but it would dump to about 200 once in a while and then come back up. I set it to 850 with everything running, but that's when it started surging.

Well, as I wrote to accordztech "Well the cleaning went pretty well until I tore the screen while cleaning it," in his IAC cleaning DIY. I figure that since it's a small tear it's not making that much difference in the amount of air getting in and the screen was just protecting against particulates getting past. I don't really know, I'm just guessing. I have a line on a used IACV that I may try, if I can't get this fixed, but i can't believe that a little tear in the screen would cause the surging.

              crud.

But, if you were going to rest your idle...IACV connected or not, and if disconnected, what would you disconnect?

I'm not following you. What do you mean "just the iacv"?

hey doyna...damn u still have that problem...have u ever found another guy with a cb7 to swap the part to?

i remember he sprayed inside just a bit, maybe the crud built up on the senor....what u guys think...

sometimes the idle goes up and down if its too high, that was my problem...yet this problem is weird....your not throwing any check engine codes right?

thats where he was saying some stuff....

if there is a tear in the screen then it can affect it if u think about it. since the "normal operation" of the IAC is to detect flow kinda, the tear in the screen is obstructing the flow of air, slightly...that may be why ur experiancing this...

you know what, im not sure but i think u can remove that screen...it seems as though you can....haha dont do it, ill do it to my car so you wont damage yours any further....i want to see whats beyond that, if the sensor is right there maybe that can help you in that it may have some crud on it or something...
What makes me laugh about forums, is that no matter how much you try to help someone, they dont take the advice. Go ahead and do it the hard way.

You got to respect what you drive, and appreciate what you have, making the best of what you got. and if that means putting CAI, HID's, a phat stereo system, and a idiot in the drivers seat...then so be it!

new unit is 150...thats why i wonder if he can swap out that part with a friends for a day to see if thats the problem or not....

question! with the IAC disconnected does the engine still revv up and down?

ill see if i can remove my screen....dont do it yet! haha

Alriht, I await your tests. It would seem to me though that the screen is serving little purpose, so the tear is rather insignificant.

Still though, what's the proper/best way to reset the idle?

I don't know anyone else well enough to borrow a part from their car. There's a guy down the block with a 92-93 LX, but I've never talked to him, only seen him around the street.

The engine only revs while I'm out driving, it's never done it when I'm near my house, so as you might imagine, I've never diconnected the IACV, while out on a drive. By the way, what do you mean when you say disconnect the IACV?

Go to the online 4th gen workshop manual which is a *sticky* at the top of this section. The adjustment is in there. I believe you unplug the electrical connection to the IAC (idle motor), start the car, adjust the idle to 550-650, using the screw on the throttle body. Then shut off the car, re-connect the IAC plug, reset the ECU, then start the car. It should put the idle at about 750-800 rpm. Do all of this with the motor FULLY warmed up (Let it idle until the radiator fan clicks on a couple times).
