    Failed emissions

Failed emissions today. High Nox and CO2 readings. I sea foamed it and drove in the highway for like 45 minutes so now it passes CO2 easy, but the Nox is still about 150 over.

I used ISO Heet before to try and help it. Still failed. Then I retarded the timing 2 degrees which helped, but not enough.

I'm thinking EGR cleaning. Any ideas? I pass everything else by a lot, god damned Nox gases!

Cleaning the EGR should be your next step. If that doesn't pass, then it looks like you will need to replace the cat.

That's what I had to do. I failed with high NOX, but I had already cleaned out the EGR system when I replaced my motor a few months before the smog. Apparently, my cat didn't like when the valve dropped into the cylinder and sent metal fragments into the exhaust. So, I replaced the cat and passed with flying colors. If it was really far off then it might be better to save the money for the retest and put that into getting a new cat.

But, you may get lucky and just the EGR cleaning will get your car to pass.

Passing is lie 950 and I was at 1150-1200

Original cat too. I just don't want to put a damn 1.75in cat on my almost 2.5" exhaust. Damn smog

That's crazy that your car wouldn't be exempt by now due to age.

so in 3 more years no more smog? Sorry I am unfamiliar with emission tests. So once your car reaches 25 years no more emission tests required?

Well 26, but yes. So after this year 1990 cb7s don't have emissions any longer.

You can do what I did...

Buy and install new cat, pass smog, remove cat, install test pipe.

Plus, you'll have a fresh new cat to pass smog the next time.

Considering it.. But I really like what cats do. I don't want to add to the ozone doom more than I have to.

You can buy 2.5" replacement catalysts. I have one on my car from Magnaflow, part number 51206. I paid an extra $25 for higher catalyst loadings for CA emissions (49-S loading part # is 99206HM)>

I found that out myself, man! I actually got the 2.5" with the flanges for 115 bucks. Thanks though, I'm sure somebody could use that part number in the future.

Nice and clean. I ordered some 1/8npt27 plugs for future cleans.

Hey Chris LOL actually not even a month ago for me I passed emissions without a problem with EGR blocked off. But it does seem like you need a new cat.

So even if our cars aren't classified as classics with the tags we don't need emissions once 26 years old?

I am not completely 100% sure how it works in NJ but I still got like 26 months left on my inspection sticker.

I'm not sure why this is hard, lmao.

Law: any gas powered passenger vehicle over the age of 25 and under the age of 3 do not need emissions. You just pay taxes, and insurance. I think certain diesels are exempt too, but that's pretty much it.
