    VSS trouble shooting and wiring

Hey guys. I've had a bunch of issues trying to figure out which part of this VSS system is bad.

I'm pretty sure it's either the sensor itself, or the wiring to the ECU.

The lower gear piece appears to work, and the transmission appears to be fine in that area.

However, I have two of these things that I've disassembled and cleaned and put back together and neither of them works.

I feel like the wiring may be off somewhere, but I don't know where to check and what to check for.

If anyone has any information on this I'd be greatly appreciative.

The Orange wire goes to the ecu, the ip,
ABS, and cruise. Make sure the yellow wire is getting power, the black wire had a good ground, and the Orange wire outputs a signal.

Alright, so if I have my key on, and in the on position, run my multimeter from the yellow wire (without the vss plugged in) to either the black wire, the chassis, or the negative terminal on my battery, I should get 5v or something, right?

Because I did this earlier and got nothing. Actually, at one point I got around 0.05 volts consistently.

So, where do I go from here?

Where should I try to trace the wire to to find the issue? Is there a fuse or anything I can check?

I think its fuse 1, but the source comes from the fuse then splits off to the IP and the VSS.

Alright. Thanks. If I'm getting voltage to the fuse box there, the wiring should be good, right?

If you're getting a voltage reading in the yellow wire at the fuse box, but not at the vss, your writing is messed up.

And just to 100 percent make sure. I can stick my multimeter into the fuse on either side, if the fuse is intact, and ground on the chassis and with the ignition on I should get 5dcv at that fuse, correct? And then I should be able to do the same to the plug for the vss, plugged in or not, the yellow wire itself should get 5dcv.

Now, for the orange wire, to trace it back, could I just hit it with a 9v battery, ground it on the chassis, and just hit the plug on my ecu plug and get some sort of current?

I'm sorry for asking for so much assistance. I generally don't trace wiring issues around and I want to make sure I do it right.

I believe you are correct except I'm not sure if you'll get 5V or 14V out of the fuse box. I wouldn't power that Orange wire. It doesn't just go to the ECU.

You should be getting about 12vdc if the car is not running, 14vdc if it is. Make sure the ignition is in the ON position while testing, since the VSS doesn't get power in any other position.
