Removing F22 engine without removing transmission

Found out my F22A6 has a blown head gasket, so I want to swap out the motor with a spare I have.

I was planning on swapping the whole thing (engine+transmission) but a buddy at work said he was able to remove the engine only, without removing the transmission.

Has anyone done this? It would save a lot of time, no need to pull axles and shift cables, etc.

I haven't done this with a Accord, but from the experience I have doing it both ways, It seems to be more hassle than it's worth and there is no time savings trying to fight with it in a fwd vehicle. The extra space you have to work with and ease of operation out weighs any precieved time savings due to removing a few extra bolts.

I don't think its possible to pull it separate if you have a 5 Speed. Ive heard its possible on an auto trans..

I've done it. I've also pulled just the trans and left the motor in the car. Mine is an auto. So as someone else said, if yours is manual trans then it might not be possible. I wouldn't know the difference. Sorry.

It's pretty straight forward. However, it does make putting the motor back in more difficult. There is less room to work with.

But, seeing as how far you are going, it really wouldn't be much more difficult to pull motor+trans. Plus it will make mating the two together a lot easier.

Ive also done it, but only on an automatic. Reason is that you can fully unbolt the torque converter by accessing it through the little plate underneath, separating the trans+guts from the motor, allowing it to slide up and out. With a manual, the clutch and pressure plate stay atttached to the motor, and interfere with the bellhousing of the trans.

I would only recommnnd doing this if you have an automatic, and if you know what youre doing. While technically you get to remove less, with less working room it isnt as easy to maneuver or bolt them back together straight.

I have a 5-speed, so looks like the whole schebang is coming out. Makes sense though, my buddy had an automatic. Thanks everyone.
