    What does F22A6 REALLY mean?

    I was searching for something that explained what the engine numbers mean in detail... but didn't come up with much.

    A Honda tech told me that the A and 6 (in F22A6) ISN'T describing the intake or exhaust setups. It's stamped on the block, hence describing the engine block and its contents (not manifolds or exhausts).

    He didn't know much else, but guaranteed me that much. Why would Honda label an engine block based on what exhaust and intake are attached to it? The F is the block, the 22 is 2.2 Litres, and could the A6 be describing the head configuration (cam size, crankshaft) in some way?

    F= Engine Block Style

    22=Engine Size

    A= ?

    6= ?

    Well, when they stamp it, they do it based on the whole engine, not just the block. They already know what they plan to put on top when they stamp it. The F22A1/4/6 blocks are all the same. Only differences happen in the head, intake, and header. I believe the "A" represents it being a SOHC nonVTEC (F22B being DOHC and VTEC... I think) and the 6 means it has the cast iron, 4-2-1 header and dual runner intake

        are all engines set up this way? being that the numbers are the engine size?

          All Honda/Acura engines are. I believe at least most Nissan engines are like that, but Toyotas are pretty much random numbers and letters as far as I can tell :P

            the way i look at it, the F is the block style, the 22 is the size (2.2) and the A is the model... with the 1/4/6 being the revision...

            like the A was the OBD1 accords, the F22Bx was the OBD2 accords... F20C was the newer S2k... each one is a higher model than the first...

            then the 1/4/6 was the revision, like it started at the base model f22a1, then the a4 was a little upgraded with the 4-2-1 exhaust, then hte a6 was better with the secondary runners etc.

            i want details about the other f22a's, like the f22a2 and such... wonder what teh differences were.

              cpmike is right on the f22a stuff, but not all f22bx's were OBD2. i think the B would indicate a major revision in the head design, since the port spacing on the F22bx is different, and on the F22b DOHC, its DOHC head. just a thought . . .

                The number at the end always seems to change. H22A1 would be a prime example. The DOHC theory couldn't be true because of H22 A 1. Honda and their mysterious numbers are beginning to piss me off.

                  True.... but the A would be meaning for the H series...not the F series...

                    Obviously, the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd characters have a meaning, and everyone knows what they mean. However the 4th and 5th characters in Hondas engine codes do not stand for anything in particular, they are just designations....the letter or number could be anything. Example; the 5th gen Accords DX/LX/SE have a F22B2, whereas the EX has a F22B1....but in the 4th gens the "1" was the base engine...and as you can see for the 5th gens "2" is designated for the base and "1" is for the EX motors. So you see, there really is no consistency, they really don't have any "specific" meaning....they are just made up letters and numbers.

                      Wasn't the f22a also put in the oddessey or something like that? anyway I agree with mrhonda that those are not there for universal meaning or consistency.

                        I love how you related engine codes to religion fizz you always sound like you have a great resentment towards the world, it makes me sad sometimes

                              i don't care what you people say, they have to mean something. IMO it would be worth getting to the bottom of it because it's useful information that we talk about regularly. Honda isn't going to give meaning to the first three characters of an engine model, then just randomly make up the rest.

                              i'm going to write Honda and ask them. they're surprisingly friendly.
