    Brake problem

I wasn't sure where to post this but here it is:

When I step on the brakes, they really give at first, and then tighten up once you press a bit more. Every other car I have ever driven, if you put your foot on the brake, you get a stiff response from the pedal from the very start of you touching them. But for some reason my brake pedal gives and then stiffens up. Is it a brake problem or is it supposed to have a little give and then stiffen up? This is the first car I have driven that wasn't new within 6-7 years, so is this type of thing common to older cars? Cause it feels a little awkward when you touch the brakes and don't feel that instant response.

There could be many things to look at.

First, is there air in the system? You might need to bleed the brakes if the previous owner did any work with the hydraulic system. Second, your master cylinder could be going bad. It happens on our cars. If the pedal sinks to the floor with constant pressure, than its bad. Third, if you replaced the brake pads without replacing/resurfacing the rotors, the pedal will be spongy for quite sometime until the new pads seat evenly with the rotor.

Finally, if everything checks out okay, keep in mind that there is a quarky thing about 91-93 Accords with ABS (ALB in '91). With an ABS system, there are some extra passages that the conventional brake hydraulic system flows through to co-exist with the ABS system, including a modulator. Because of the fluid must travel through exotic passages under the hood, the pedal can feel a little wierd or "semi-spongy" at first compared to non-Honda or conventional brakes found on other models (DX, LX). The difference is hardly noticeable, but does exist, and I believe was corrected in later years.

Except for the fact that I don't work on my own car because I don't know how to do any of that under the hood under the car stuff.. I'm a driver and I like to style the outsides. I know nothing about the mechanical thingies except how to check the oil and how to keep the oil and windshield washer fluid up so the engine don't break.

Fizzbob, its not all bad. He pays the salaries for guys like mrhonda and plenty of other techs. So he's helping stimulate the economy, which is truly the American way.

I have a 92 LX Coupe. I have noticed that when the weather is really hot and I have been driving a long distance, my brake pedal sinks towards the floor (almost like I have a bad master cylinder) however when I check the brake fluid reservoir it is full. This only happens when I drive long distances and the weahter is hot. If I pump the brakes, then I am able to stop for a while, however keeping my foot on the pedal makes it sink to the floor.
