    starting issue

This is more or less just me checking on your guys opinions on this somewhat-new problem o' mine. My car won't start at random times. Completely random, nothing regular about it. I turn the key and the starter turns as it normally would to start the car, but it's not kicking over. It's like it's either not getting fuel or maybe not a spark or something. The most common culprit of this, i've read, is the main relay. So what exactly am I looking for, problem wise, if I take this thing out and look at it? Someone said that it was under the dash somewhere, but that's a little too vague for me. Is there any easy way to check the relay for problems? Say that the main relay is fine, where should I head to next. The next logical step to me would be the fuel filter (which has very recently been replaced) then fuel pumps, then the starter. Anyone else think this is the right route to take, provided the main relay isn't the problem? Thanks greatly ahead of time.

on another note, can someone show me a pic of the relay so i know what I'm looking for. Again, thanks.
