    shifting at 5900

i have an auto and was wondering why the redline goes to 6700-6800 or so and if i hold the pedal to the floor, why does it shift at 5900. is it just b/c it's old or b/c it's an auto. my gf's 99 prelude will not shift until it hits redline if you hold it. anyhow i was just curious although i don't drive this way normally. i realize it's an old car and i usual just put right along. i just had a speed streak in me the other day and thought i'd flog it out.

Its possible that is because your gf's car is a real sports car so the TCU is calibrated differently. I have yet to see any accord auto go past 6k on the stock ecu, tcu combo.

oh well that would make sense then if no stock accord goes past 6K.. it just begs the ? of why put the redline at around 6800 if the car will never run there without changing the ecu. unless they use the same tach in manuals and manuals will run to that rpm

because thats what the motors internals are capable of...it doesn't mean that it flows air or gets any kind of power up there. Power starts to drop flat on its face at 5200ish RPM.
Knowledge is power...in EVERY sense of the word

isn't the redline at like 6250? not positive, haven't looked in a while, but just something I was thinking of. In which case it would make perfect sense for your auto to shift a few hundred rpm before that. And as already stated theres no power up there anyway.

mine used to go past the redline in 1, 2nd, and 3rd but not anymore. i think the highest i have seen is the 6700rpm in my 92 lx.

yes it is at 6250. but for me, if i floored it, it would goto redline and shift. i never had a problem with it shifting earilier

After talking to my dad he told me something very interesting about automatic transmission equipped cars. He told me that the ecu and tcu gets trainned based on the driving style of its owner. So maybe its possible that the previous owners of your car have never went at WOT.

why do you want to go past 5900rpm in a slushbox? to use that mad vtaK yo?

just get a manual, still wont have to shift that high, and be able to have fun without a ecu selecting your shift points

Makes sense to me. If a car has never been driven hard in like 150K+ miles, should it just be able to redline out of nowhere? The ECU and TCU records and adapts to the driving style of the driver.
