clicking sound when i turn car over

When i try to start my car now, it begins to turn over like once...then it clicks rapidly and fairly loudly, and wont start. any ideas?

also it seems like it's loosing power when it trys to turn over, the sound it not as high, and it just seems weaker/slower.

That would be my guess as well.

Edit: you could push start it too.

Probably, but that might damage the catalytic converter.

jboyce: also verify your battery connections are tight.

no its not going to damage the CAT.

battery connections should be good and clean.

mostlikley its a bad starter, a slow starter can mean battery is low or the starter is going bad.

when it just clicks, and does nothing....its the starter mostly cause nothing is working in there...u can easilly hammer the starter if it clicks and then start it and it will start with no problem.

check the battery, get a voltage tester and test the voltage, and have someone start it...

when the car is at rest it should read at around 12v. but when you start it, it shouldnt go below 9v...if it does then your starter can be fuked cause its taking too much amperage from the battery making it sound weaker and weaker.
What makes me laugh about forums, is that no matter how much you try to help someone, they dont take the advice. Go ahead and do it the hard way.

You got to respect what you drive, and appreciate what you have, making the best of what you got. and if that means putting CAI, HID's, a phat stereo system, and a idiot in the drivers seat...then so be it!

ight well shit, first i thought it was the coil, which i replaced with a used one so it could still be bad. i recharged the battery overnight and it doesnt sound weak anymore, it just wont start. so it turns over steadily and sounds strong, but it just wont fire up. so check my starter and alternator?

ok i checked ALL fuses, all good. i'm gonna get a voltage meter and check the used/new coil to make sure i'm gettin 12 volts. i get power to everything in my car, radio, headlights, everything, car cranks really strong, but just wont fire up. i'm gonna go check my wires for spark, and wire from coil for spark right now. any more help is appreciated, thanks.

check all your battery connections and see if the battery is going bad and also clean all of the harnesses(wires) hooking onto the battery it was weird the same thing happened to me the positive wire was a lil loose so i tightened it nothing so i checked my neg the whole inside of the wire was crooded, but the outside was fine

o well i hope that helped you out

that happened to me a bit ago, would crank but not turn over, replaced the coil and that did nothing so i took that back, got a distributor, replaced that and fired right up.. do that as a last resort as theyre pricey

nah my connections are good, i hit it with a hammer about 6 months ago and i still cant even move the wires.

also i have a new dist. on the way, should be here tomorrow, only payed $45. hopefully i have this fixed soon.

EDIT: this is BULLSHIT, i tested the plug going into the coil the other day and it had 12 volts. but it wasn't putting 12 volts out to the distru. now today with the NEW coil(used) i checked to see if i got spark from the coil...nothing. so i'm still not gettin spark from the coil even with 12 volts going in. and i dont think i can return the coil even though i payed $30!!! waste of fucking money, it's bullshit...i hate u-pull it.

Could be the ignitor inside the distributor. I had the same problem and it was the ignitor.

Please explain how you can damage your cat by push starting a car?

                            RustBucket93 ---

Most owner's manuals specifically warn against push-starting.

It can pump through a lot of unburned crap through the exhaust (albeit briefly) and clog the cat starting a car this way.

I have no idea just how much of a risk it actually is, particularly if you only do it like one time out of desperation.

i never seen that..maybe in desils but not in cars now.

push starting is the same as starting the car normally...just push starting is manual where the flywheel will still turn the engine.
