hey i was takin the upper ball joint bolt off to punch out a broken cotter pin, and the whole hub tilted down, and the brand new axle is attached, the rubber boot that is next to the halfshaft is pulled tight and now the hub wont rotate up again? did i mess up the axle? or is it just not lined up right to go back in? the axle is tight and it is still in the halfshaft, so did the internals in the rubber boot pull apart?

first of all i don't really see a reason to take the upper ball joint off just to remove the cotter pin. that's unnecessary. but to answer your main question, you didn't mess up your axle unless the boot tore. you just have to rotate the hub and it should line up and go right back in. the internals did come off but it should pop back in when you turn it. make sure the boot didn't tear.

Sorry to bring in old topic up from the dead, but using the search function I found this topic and it pretty much sums up the problem I am having.
I removed my upper control arm last night to replace it with a new one. The same thing happened to me, i took the old arm out, put the new one in and now I cant get the arm up close enough to hook the lower ball joint up.
I know the shaft came apart inside the boot, I can turn the wheel side and the tranny side stays in place. I can tell what straight is by looking at the boots mold line in the rubber.
The boot is not torn and I never had any problems with the shaft up till now. I have spent a good fifteen minutes playing with it trying to get it back together.
Is this something that should just pop back in or? Could the internals of the joint have fallen apart where they wont go back together and i just cant see it because the boot isnt torn?
I would really like to get this back together tonight so I can drive to work tomorrow.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
