    egr ports

i know my egr ports are clogged with carbon and they have to be cleaned out,i have all the directions to clean out the ports but i still dont understand this.if anyone has done this before please let me know how hard it was and also i dont understand what the egr ports do and also when i drill into the pluggs isnt the shavings going to go into the engine and ruin it??ireally dont undertand.when i clean off the carbon doesnt it just fall into the engine and ruin it?i just dont know much about that part of the engine.thanks

the exhaust gas carbon and deposits has a long way to get into the combustion chamber. Theres a series of twists and turns it has to get through to reach the engine. Use some carb cleaner and a small flexible tooth brush if ur that worried about it seeping into the engine and then use a vaccum and hose to pull the remains out. Your not gonna be able to make the ports pearly sparkling white but if u can unclog it thats good enough

what plugs are u talking about? the hardest thing to get off is those two 12mm bolts holding the egr to the intake mani

no a pic would not do,if you look at your engine you will see 4 pluggs that are about the size of a dime, maybe a little bigger,i am supposed to take those out and clean the ports, there a 4 of them for the 4 ports,if i take off my egr valve can i clean out the egr valve,?i am confused but i do know there are 4 ports to be cleaned because i have the driections i justdont understand, and i cansee the gold pluggs on my exhaust manifold.

the egr ports u'd be cleaning would be on the intake manifold not the exhaust. Facing the engine and looking at the "4 gold colored plugs" is the egr directly to the left of them? And u said something about instructions on how to clean the ports...can you write them out real quick?

Here is a link to the directions from tech2tech.com that is no longer online. The plugs are aluminum. You drill and and tap for a screw or for the "easy out" that is described in the information and use the slide hammer to remove the plugs.

P.S. If anyone here ever think's they'll need this information in the future, please download it NOW. I will be purging it from my web space at some point.

but the plugs are on the intake manifold right?
i would never go that far to clean the egr anyways i'd just block it off puposefully like i already have

I don't know how strick they are in Florida with emmissions, but that might not fly in other places aside from other performance issues from doing that.

there aren't any emissions in FL and there aren't any performance issues from blocking it...at all. But yea i didn't stop to think that he's in another state and probably needs to pass emissions, terribly sorry

It does negatively impact your fuel economy. And it doesn't give you more power or anything when you block it off.

I did the same thing when my ECu keep thorwing cel 12(EGR) I clean the EGR valve but the code 12 keep coming back every few day, so I drill and clean the port, it hard to clean , but I was able to break up alot of carbon deposit. My tech told me to drive hard after I clean it so it get suck into the intake manifold and get burned. no code for 3 day and then it came back. And yes I clear the ECU everytime. hmm wonder if EGR do go bad, any way to test them, without buying a new one?? those thing are expensive $200+
