    Strange sound...

When I am driving my transmission(I think) makes a sound kind of like a high pitched hissing or gear whine when I accelerate. It sounds like my car has turbo when it doesn't. Doesn't seem to affect driving, just curious if it's the begining of a problem.

Hey you sure it isn't your alternator making the noise, sometimes when they go bad it sounds like a turbo.... lol... Also I have heard that when the trans starts to go, it starts whining... Not sure if that is true, however.

The tranny in my civic started to make that noise a couple months before it went up.

My stepfather's 90 EX-R's auto tranny makes a whining sound, most noticeably in first gear. I hear it's common on Honda 4 speed automatic transmissions. Doubtful it will cause any problems, but if you can spare the cash, get the tranny flushed at a transmission shop.

Thanks for the input, do you think it could have to do with my idling problem in anyway? Cuz it wants to act up when it drops to first gear.

Well...my 93 Accord SE started making that same "turbo" whine, and it wasn't coming from the transmission.

It wouldn't make this noise when the engine was cold, it would start whining as soon as the engine was warmed up.

Then one day after a while driving the car, the Charge lamp would start to kinda flash. Later that same evening it started doing that, my dashboard lights went real dim, and my tachometer quit working. I barely managed to drive back home.

The next morning, the car started up with no problems, so I took it to get the alternator checked. The computer read it was working perfectly fine. Until I turned on the headlights, high beams, stereo, wipers, defogger, etc. and left the car idling (to let the alternator warm up). Surely enough, the computer read the alternator was failing.

ANYWAY...I need to buy an alternator (I'm probably going to get a rebuilt one from the local auto parts store, for about $130 - lifetime warranty).

My question is, is anyone else here with me in thinking that whine sound coming from the engine is most likely the bad alternator?

So did a new alternator solve the problem? Im having this same issue lately. This morning I had the loud whining sound at idle and when I was switching my air vents I could hear it switchin very very slowly like it doesnt have enough power. Hope a new alternator fixes it.

My car does (less now) and used to do this far more last winter. I thought it was a bearing in the alternator as I had caught the noise long enough to open the hood and hear it coming from that area.

Remove the Alternator Belt, if the noise goes then that's your answer.

yo Shadow....... have you actually opened up the hood and try to listen from which area the noise is coming from ??? if it is from the driver side you can pretty much eliminate the tranny.. and if it is from the driver side do as the Guru suggested,,
