    sticky shifter...

my shifter is rather "groggy" and doesn't like being put into 1st gear at all, second gear most of the time, and third gear every so often...never any trouble putting it into 4th or 5th gear though..

is my problem like lack of grease, or is it a linkage problem?

my shifter has been doing the EXACT same thing lately. last weekend i added more tranny fluid (found it was definitely low) thinking that may have been a contributing factor but i has seemed to get even more difficult to shift into 1st and 2nd espescially, sometimes reverse.

i tried my best today to visually inspect the cables going to the tranny and they look fine to me. but whenever i get more free time i am going to rip out the center console and see whats goin on there.

Its hard to visually inspect the cables from above the engine compartment. You need to get under the car and really check them out. When my cables crapped out, the cable had rubbed through the shroud and was binding up. I could not see the damage until I decided to remove the cables and replace them. As soon as they were out, I say the extent of the damage.

yea, i pretty much just lifted up my short ram to see if the cable ends were intact because it times it doesnt even feel like it, lol. but im due for an oil change soon so when i get that done, a more detailed inspection will take place.

so when you cables were damaged, did you have these symptoms?

Ive never had those symptoms. Check your cables out first have someone sit in the car when its of and have them shift the gears and check for bindage. Then if you dont see anythign binding check the transmission fluid.

Yes sir...the shifts felt extremely spongy and it was difficult to engage the gears...It got to the point where the shifter was stuck in 1st gear and I had to change the gears via the trans. select levers under the hood, just to move the car around the lot.

yeah, just checked around...looked at my shifter, there isnt a place to adjust it inside, so i peeked around under the hood...i had tons of air bubbles in my clutch lines...same exact symptoms as you had...i bled that again with my dad's help, and then i adjusted the clutch pedal itself, that took care of its sagging, and it is no longer spongy, it has nice firm engagement and let-off.

shit, you got off lucky. i replaced my cables and then my leaky slave cylinder finally narrowing it down to the clutch. blah.

it wasnt too bad for it being the first time i had ever attempted it and w/o instruction. id say the most difficult part for me was bolting the rubber piece into place (where the cables make the transition from under the car to inside; you will recognize it if you saw it). pulling down the exhaust shield made it easier tho.

yea it would have been easier, but its not THAT much more work to do w/ the engine in. its the being under the car part that i despise.
