weird shake/vibrate, and it worries me.

    Hello.

I've recently discovered that at about 62-73 miles per hour, my car vibrates/shakes like the motor mount is bad. But...if I put the clutch in, it still vibrates. Now, if I go faster or slower than that...the sympotom goes away. I can do 80mph and FLOOR it in 3rd/4th/5th and get NO shake. Same goes with 55(ish) mph. At all other speeds, regaurdless of engine load (even at idle) the car vibrates/shakes.

The vibration is primarily in the steering wheel, I can't really feel it anywhere else and the only way I know to discribe it is like a bad motor mount. But if it where just a bad motor mount, then it should do it at all speeds under hevey load right? Not just 62-73ish miles per hour.

Btw, just as a side note. The car idles flawlessly.

I'm thinking it's in the suspention somewhere, but I don't even know where to get started.

    Thanks guys for any input.

    1. are your tires balanced
    2. are your tires pressured correctly
    3. is your car sitting the same in all wheel wells

hope u can find the problem.

I have the same problem. I reckon it's the wheels being unbalanced. I recently had my clutch and right axle redone and I think somehow that is where the problem stems from. I'm gonna get an alignment and balancing done soon...so we'll see. My problem is from those speeds also, and it goes nuts when I let it coast or I brake. Hopefully it's just balancing. Good luck on finding a diagnosis.

im dealing with some similar issues, sometimes its completely fine other times its bad. My tires are new and balanced, and the upper ball joints just done, im gonna look into powersteering, specifically the speed sensitive unit.

oh shit i forgot to add.

yes, the tires are pressured correctly, rotated and balanced. I have brand new brakes (rotors/pads). As far as #3, yes, I believe so.

I'll look into the driveshaft thing. Thanks!

Btw, it's really odd...because sometimes it doesn't vibrate at those speeds (usually lasts about 10 seconds, untill something changes )

I wish I knew what this was.

double check the tires again and maked sure that they do not have uneven tire wear. also check your alignment. accords do have a probem all the way up to 2002 that the steering wheel shimmies a little.

Could be worn out suspension components.. what have you replaced, what is stock on the basic items?

If you have a very bad vibration/shaking WHEN accelerating, then most likely it is your axles. You can check to see if they are worn out without even taking them out of the car. I'll make a lil how-to graphic since when I explain it to people, its hard to understand.

But if your vibration stays when you are up to speed, and coasting, that isnt your axles since they have nothing to do with it. Unless of course somehow they are bent.

                        EDIT:

Take a look at this pic. If you hold one of the ends of an axle (one at a time , red on illustration), then just try to rotate the axle shaft around. If there is ANY play, meaning if the axle shaft is rotating while you are holding the inner/outer part still, then that is very likely the cause of your problem of a vibration on acceleration.

from 62-73.... thats funny cause those are the same speeds my car shook from and to then I balanced all 4 tires and the problem went away. My teacher said you will only feel an unbalanced tire for a very short range of speed (usually above 60 he said) so it only makes sense. But you said they are all balanced.... if thats the case it could possibly be a bent axle, but the cause of that is usually other kinds of suspension damage...

Yea apparently the resonance of the wheels is at that speed...I got new front tires, they balanced them...problem went away.

Considering you say that all wheels are correctly balanced, Tyre Wear OK, and the alignment is OK.
A couple of suggestions have been the Drive Shafts, I would also be looking at the LH INTERMEDIATE DRIVESHAFT BEARING.
Any play in this bearing can cause the problem you describe.???
