auto shifter problem

i have an automatic trans and when i go to put it into park the light around the "P" on the guages wont light up unless i bump the shifter around. the problem with this is the key wont release unless the light is on, so im sometimes messing with it for a while. it also does it (allthought to a lesser extent) for reverse. what gives?

same probablem here for the park . sometimes makes 5 minutes b4fore i cna finally take the key out.

Possibly need a new linkage....

I would say you probably have a bad "shift lock". My buddy had this problem with his Accord. It's the piece that makes you press the brake in order to take it out of park. Pretty inexpensive if I remember correctly.
