    Overheating problem

This just started like 2 days ago (the car has been sitting for about a month. Well after it warms up it'll be fine for a while then it will throw a check engine light and start to overheat. Now my fans haven't kicked on or I just haven't heard them so I was thinking maybe the thermostat switch but i thought it would be good to ask since maybe somebody has had this problem.
    Thanks ahead of time.

checking the thermostat switch is a good start. you can also check the fan switches. there are two of them; one in the front upper radiator hose neck and one behind that. they should turn on if you car starts to overheat a bit. the check engine light concerns me though. a bad thermostat and/or fan switches shouldn't throw a CEL. there could be other problems. check what code the CEL means. good luck!

        Exactly...

First, check your coolant levels when the car is cold.
Or better yet, I suggest you drain and refill your coolant for the long months we have left in winter...you said you havent been driving it for a month? Did you encounter any leaks?

After you've refilled your coolant, wait for the fans to kick on, both of them.

This was my problem, today...one of the my fans, not the A/C fan wasnt working...so i took it out...i found out that it was melted and jammed!!! 15 year old fan...it had to happen one day.

Might be your fans not working, or your thermosensor and/or thermostat...

As for the CEL...what code is it throwing?

The CEL light only comes on once the car gets warm and then it will be fine for a while then it will start to overheat and it will throw a light. As for the fans and color of my coolant, the fans haven't kicked on, but the coolant is green like its suppose to be. And there are no leaks. I'm not sure what the code is as of yet becasue i wasn't sure if my car (wasn't sure because of the P14 ECU) had a pin connector instead of the LED on the ECU that flashes to tell you the code. But I'm gonna get the connector from work so i can get this shit checked out and hopefully its nothing too serious.

Thanks for all the feedback guys You guys are the shit

BOTH FANS? i got one running. standing and facing under the hood: the passenger side fan works. i was told the other(driverside) is the A/C fan? well, not BOTH are running, and i do have an over-heating problem too. sometimes it'll get hot before i drive far/long. so far i found i got a problem with my heater core. if thats relevant. i worried about my fans,rad,t-stat,and ECT switch. instead of having a bad bypass hose,i found out it was the heater-core

please address my problem if you can. hope i aint jacking your thread because these might help you too.

Yes, both fans are supposed to kick on. I know, most of the times, just one kicks on...the passenger side...but in reality, both are supposed to kick on when the motor is getting hot...even in the winter.

use a circuit tester and see if they actually work...dont pay the price for an exploding Radiator and tow truck fees...make sure your fan(s) work before the summer gets here, then you know what the deal is...

              Good luck!

                  dude get the CEL code!
What makes me laugh about forums, is that no matter how much you try to help someone, they dont take the advice. Go ahead and do it the hard way.

You got to respect what you drive, and appreciate what you have, making the best of what you got. and if that means putting CAI, HID's, a phat stereo system, and a idiot in the drivers seat...then so be it!

No problem I'm glad that this is helpin someone else too.

As for my car its just been back and forth, the connector had three prongs on it not 2 like i thought, and of course I we don't have a three prong connector at work but I saw today that the connector only has 2 wires going to it so I can use the little jumper cable connector I have at work. So hopefully I can get this shit checked out and fixed tommorow night after work PRAY ITS NOTHING MAJOR

Ok so i checked the code tonight and it came back as a: 10, 12, 17, 43, and 6. I have a list of codes for the 1990 accord with a stock ECU but i'm not sure if the codes are the same as what it would be for my ECU, and the h23. But the funny thing tonight I tried to get the light to come on again by letting the car idle which was the same thing as before when the CEL came on, but tonight it never overheated and the CEL never came on. (Car stayed 1/4 of way warm as it always does when it running right)

oOo the codes for the accord sheet of have of the codes and what the stand for are: 6;coolant temp. 10;intake air temp. 12;exhaustgas recirculation system 17;vehicle speed sensor 43;fuel supply system
Which sounds about right but I don't what do you guys think?
