Hot Soak Causing No-Start : EFI Main Relay

The most common no-start problem in Honda Accords is after a "hot soak", i.e When you pull in to a servo for fuel, or in your case, to get light beer for the Missus, switch the engine off for a minute or two, jump back in and try to start the car.

The main cause is temporary failure of the EFI Main Relay due to HOT SOAK caused by high Under Bonnet temperatures, it is more prevalent in Hot Weather

You can replicate this condition at home.
Start The Engine and leave in Park or Neutral(Handbrake On).
Hold the engine revs at about 2000 - 2500 rpm for about 15 - 20 minutes with the bonnet shut. (Make sure you're out in the open as well or you'll die).
Using something to hold the throttle open would be better if you're a "Girly Man!".
If you've got "Arnie the Governator" Legs you should be OK.
        Switch the engine off.
Let it sit for about 5 minutes or so. Then try to start the engine.
If the engine cranks over OK but doesn't start, turn the key to the "On" Position.
The C.E.L should come on for about 2 seconds and then go out.(Normal)
You should also hear the fuel pump prime during that two seconds.(Normal)
When the C.E.L goes out you should hear the "EFI Main Relay" click.(Normal)
If it doesn't click(Not Normal), Locate the relay in the Main Fuse Box. Feel how hot it is. Check Terminal '4' (to fuel pump) on the EFI Main Relay for 12 Volts and Terminal '3' (ECU) for Earth.
If you have No Power @ T4 and you have an Earth @ T3, the EFI Main Relay may have overheated and temporarily failed.

Note: If the EFI Main Relay fails, the fuel pump will not operate and you will not get fuel pressure. Also if the Main Relay fails there wont be any Voltage at the Injectors, EACV or O2 Sensor as well.

You could either Let it sit for another 15 - 20 minutes and try again or remove the EFI Main Relay and cool it down in the freezer for about a minute or so. If it Starts OK then the EFI Main Relay has cooled down sufficiently to operate properly.

Replace the EFI Main Relay when possible.
Insulating the Fuse Box Lid and Relay may help prevent this problem re-occurring.

The EFI Main Relay may not be the only cause. You could also have a Crook Ignition Switch, Igniter or Ignition Coil but that is another story.

Refer to Chapter 12 Page 19 @ B-11 In the Haynes Workshop Manual.
