    Distributor leaking oil ?

    Hi gang

My 91 Wagon seems to have developed an oil leak. From what I can tell, it seems to be coming from the distributor and leaking down the head and onto the bellhousing of the tranny

    1) Is this the right diagnosis or is there something else that can be wrong? Valve cover, head gaskets etc check out OK.

    2) Will replacing the distributor be my only choice or is it a simple -o-ring, seal etc ?

    3) Do I have to set timing etc etc when I replace the distributor, I dont wanna mess with timing etc, so I figured I would ask since someone here must have done this...

    Thanks!

Yeah, that definitely sound like the seal. The only difficult part about replacing it is that you need to set the distributor timing when you put it all back together and that's not even difficult. Just slightly turn the distributor either way to adjust the timing. Your ears and the way the engine is running will be able to tell you when it's set right and when it's way off. Once it's right, simply bolt the distributor down so that that it stays right where the timing is best. All in all, a very easy and basic job to do. You should be able to do it without any problems.

The "seal" you are referring to is #30110-PA1-732 distributor O-ring for all TEC distributors, $2.00 list. If you replace it, just draw aline in the distributor and the head so you know where your timing should be set.

There is another possibiity, depending on where the oil is leaking from. There is a shaft seal in the distributor, and if it leaks, will leak oil out of the distributor cap. This one is a little harder to replace and requires a bearing knife and hydraulic press.

        Thanks, all!

It is not leaking out of the cap, it seems to be somewhere farther down coz it seems to be coming out of the valve cover/head area and drenching my bellhousing.

I also have developed another leak, this one I know is from the dang oil pan gasket.

I wish I had the money for the H22, 2 good reasons to swap now...

But a big thanks for all the info esp the part no's and marking the distributor too, will make me actually wanna try to do this now.

I have another question but will start another thread on it now.

        Thanks!

mine started a small leak, i need to do it soon.
What makes me laugh about forums, is that no matter how much you try to help someone, they dont take the advice. Go ahead and do it the hard way.

You got to respect what you drive, and appreciate what you have, making the best of what you got. and if that means putting CAI, HID's, a phat stereo system, and a idiot in the drivers seat...then so be it!
