    Steering Issues

First of all, this forum kicks butt. There's a lot of good info on here. Thanks. I'm doing the tranny flush and adding Lubegard tomorrow morning since my trans is harsh and goes out second gear at stop signs. I'm hoping it takes care of the problem.

It's SickHonda93 cause my Honda has had problems ever since I got her about a year ago. It must be biting me back since I bought her off a chick at my work for 1200 bucks. I'm sick of taking it in to be fixed and have decided with the help of others input fixing things myself. I've already put more than what I paid for it in repairs and the sicknesses continue.

Here's the ongoing problem that has been irritating the H-E-double hockey sticks out me for about 6 months now...

The steering is pissing me off. Every time I drive it and make turns (while driving), it sounds like Whales Humping. Is it the power steering pump? It's real bad and people outside can hear it and give me weird looks! Is it possible to flush the power steering fluid, add new fluid and some Lubegard Power Steering Protectan to fix the problem? If not, can I take the power steering belt off to disable it and go without it? I'm down with no power steering since I used to have a 95 Civic without it.

    Any help would be sweet!
    Thanks!

have you checked your PS fluid level? if your pushing air through the pump it will make some pretty messed noises. yes it's possible to just disconnect your PS pump, but you'll need to get a new (shorter) belt to keep the other accessories working.

the only other thing i can think of from what youve described is wheel bearings (uh oh) which are a bitch and a half and real expensive to replace good luck man, i hope its something cheap and simple like adding fluid

i was driving along today and the check engine light came on.
i pulled over and looked under the hood.
    the engine was still there...

Ya I would say air going through the pump. Just make sure to check the obvious things first before you go and start replacing shit.

        air in the pump.

i have your problem right now, i did a flush but i ended up getting air in the system cause when i bled the system i rotated the wheel all the way to the end.

when its cold i get the sound, when i turn.

so next time imma take out the return line and then let it flow out while adding new one, at the same time have the car off the ground and rotate the wheel left to right but not hitting the bump stops and just barley getting to it.

i think that will help me.

but dont go lock to lock. i think that was my problem, i think it creates pressure but im nto sure. imma do this hopefully in 2 weeks.
What makes me laugh about forums, is that no matter how much you try to help someone, they dont take the advice. Go ahead and do it the hard way.

You got to respect what you drive, and appreciate what you have, making the best of what you got. and if that means putting CAI, HID's, a phat stereo system, and a idiot in the drivers seat...then so be it!

you can go lock to lock as long as you make sure your not going through enough fluid to suck more air in. one person turning the wheel and one person making sure the resevoir is full is the best way

Thanks for all the info. I did some basics today like a tranny flush (feeling smooth), a coolant flush w/new stat, and worked on that damn power steering!

WTF! It still sounds like whale mating season in my steering system!
            Heres what I did...
Pulled bottom line from reservoir and let fluid drain. Added new fluid(Honda spec) and some power steering protectant(Lubegard). On a side note, I was told the Lucas brand stuff was better. Is this true? Then I started the car and turned the shiznit out of the steering from full left to full right while keeping the cap off the reservoir. I then took it for a testdrive and it was still doing it. Was I supposed to be turning the wheel with the car not running?

If I need to do a full flush please give me step by step on doing so. If this doesn't work out can someone give some tutoring on how to remove the power steering if its possible? I prefer no power steering anyway cause I drive up and down a mountain everyday and prefer better handling. Let me know if more info on the noise and when it happens is needed.

humm sounds like you havent gotten the air out fully. imma do this next week, full flush...ill let u know what happends.

which line did u disconnect? there is a line going to the pulley pump.....and 2 comming back in.

the protectants are near the same though. i use strictly honda.

Hello, my steering is hard to steering to left (counter clockwise) however right steer (clockwise) is hard only once in a while. What's my problem?? I discover that there is bunch of power steering fluid around the bigger hose at resevior (about 1" diammeter). The oil level is good.

I plan to flush the steering fluid, how could I do that??? WHich hose should I disconnect to drain the dirty oil while refilling fluid into resevior?? There are 3 hose attach to resevior but I don't know which one is a return hose.
                  Thanks~

i have the exact problem, i checked the level of the fluid and it seems fine, i don't understand why adding fluid (while i turn the wheel from lock to lock) would help, cause wouldnt it just overflow once i turn the car off? What are areas i could check for leaking, and pics of the areas would help especially of all the components of the p/s system.....seems like a lot of people have this problem so if someone knowledgeable can provide more info than what has already been stated it would help

i don't get it. what kind of noise is that???? lol(not american) anyways from my experience i used to get this wird noise of squecking noise or something like a shack was bad. i used to get this noise everytime i turned the steering wheel and everytime i go on small bumps. it came out that it was a bolt joint.
what i am saying is don't just check the steering pomp but check other things too

could it be the balljoints that are dried up and have dirt in them ?
cause my mothers cb7 does it all the time and its not the p/s fluid
                        maby this will help

Um, if your power steering belt is loose, it will squeal when you turn.

How can you tell if your power steering belt is loose?

I checked my resevoir and it seemed full, I only added about one ounce of fluid. Has anyone ever changed their power steering fluid? Is there any place I can check for leaks that would cause this squealing noise? This is really annoying.

Ok, the way to determine a squealing belt is to get some "belt conditioner" from an auto-parts shop. Spray the conditioner onto the belt, or a pulley it rides on. Try and make it squeal again. If it doesn't, you've found the belt you need to replace.

Conditioner only works for like 30min, but it's good for determining which belt needs replacing.
