    Axle question

So in a snowstorm about a week ago I was trying to make it up a hill, spinning the tires, went sideways, and my axle popped out. I had it towed, they put the axle back in. About two days later I noticed it was leaking oil, I figured maybe somehow the axle popped back out a little bit and was leaking oil from the tranny. I was correct, but what worries me is that there is a little bit of play in the axle where it goes into the tranny. I know there shouldn't be. My mechanic thinks it's the seal, I think it may have something to do with the axle, and the shaft play. What do you guys think? Is there any kind of retainer clip that holds the axle in place? Why would it have that play? Would I be better off with a new axle?

Theres a little ring near the end of the axle. You have to make sure its seated in the transaxle, otherwise HELL YES the axle will pop out. As you are putting the axle in, just rotate it until you hear a click, and that will mean that its seated in the groove. Then force it in, reassemble, and you're good to go.

My inprofessional professional opinion is dump your mechanic. If he doesn't know how to put in an axle, hes a dumbass.

I'd say the reason the Mechanic said it was the seal would be because when the Inner CV Joint Popped out of the Trans-axle it may have damaged Axle Seal. Even refitting the CV Joint all the way with a new clip may still cause the Seal to Leak. Oil Seals have a round spring on the inner side of the seal lip to force it out and keep the lip sealed against the shaft. If this spring has come out then the seal lip may not be seating right. I'd also check the end of the Spline and make sure the circlip land hasn't broken off.

I plan on doing everything myself, that's not the problem. It's just I had to have the car towed about 20 miles so I told him while it was there check it out for me. Like I said, there's play in the axle, and since it popped out I don't want to mess around. I'll spend the 65 bucks for an axle and the 5 bucks for a seal if I have to. It sure as hell beats paying 150 bucks for a new seal on each side and I get a new axle, too Thanks for the input guys, and I'll check that circlip to see if it had broken off or not, I think I'm just going to go with the extra reassurance of a new axle though

Can anyone tell me the part #'s for the axle seal? Searching on slhondaparts.com netted me these two pics. I think #15 and 16 are the seals. Can anyone verify?
