Usually a retrofit consists of changing up your fittings since the 134 fittings are bigger. As for the refrigerant you will have to find a place that will drain it all out.

went to 2 different mechanic shops by me in NJ.....

one guy asked $300, other guy asked $320.....

      breakdown was:

      2lb of freeon @ $65.
      labor (2hrs) @ $140.
      retrofit kit @ $125.

      are these fair prices?

Find some Freeze12 and put that in your AC system. This way you dont have to do a retro fit. Its Legal in the US and its r12 without the dangerous carbons in it. It can be put into a r12 existing system without problems.

wow! two hours? It takes me 15min to recharge mine. All I did was buy this tool that grips around the refrigerant, and punctures the side of it. It has a line that hooks up to the existing line in our cars. I think it was fifteen bucks + refrigerant. If you want I will take a pic of the tool.

Maybe the labor rate was including evcuating any remaining R12 prior to the retrofit. If its the dealership that would also include a new receiver/dryer.

R12 nowadays is more expensive than 134. Its better to do the retrofit. The tool casey speaks of is basically a clamp that punctures the refrigerant can and you connect the tube to the low pressure side of the car. Im not sure how much A/C normally run around where you are. And yes it takes quite a while since they draw a vaccuum to make sure all of the refrigerant and oil is taken out.

yes, that 2hrs included the whole draining of the a/c along with the retrofit part of it....

so, am i stuck with this $300 bill or can i drain, retrofit and charge on my own??? just use the freeze12?

so, since this is a first time charge.... it needs to be drained....which is something a mechanic shop must do and not an avg joe like me?
