    Question about the MPH Gauges

I'm having this problem that sometime when I turn on the car and Accelerate the car the MPH gauge goes up and down and I don't know what the speed that I'm goin at..it just stay up for 2 sec than the needle just drop back down and go up and the speed of the car is steady..what it could be?..I think is a sensor but I don't know where is it..help please

    It is your speed sensor.

Occasional speed readings at any given random speed...yes sir

The Speed sensor is located on top of the transmission, located in a "bitch-ass" location...get your angle wrench ready and a bottle of power steering fluid b/c you'll lose a little when pulling it out.

Edit: Look towards the firewall...it has 2 inlets for hoses with 3 bolts(i forget) to loosen...

Accord13&BA4 is right but i believe there is only one bolt holding it down. there are two small power steering lines that go to it. they are labeled 10 and 27 in the pic below and the speed sensor is at the end of those hoses.

Like has already been said, it's your VSS.

If you have a manual transmission, the biggest time saving tip is to disconnect one of the shift cable brackets to get at the VSS. You don't have to remove the cable bracket, but if you disconnect it, you can push it out of the way and get at the bolts on the VSS a little easier.

Swapping them is easy, it should take less than 20 minutes even if you put your tools away slowly.

Here's my little walkthrough that I wrote a while ago when I replaced my VSS. This was on a manual so it might be slightly different for an auto tranny.

Replacing The Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS)
              ------------------
              0. Disconnect battery.

              1. Remove the air intake.

              2. Remove the two 12mm bolts that hold the rearmost transmission cable bracket. You don't have to disconnect the cable (although it wouldn't hurt) but disconnect the bracket so you can move it slightly out of the way and it gives you much easier access to one of the VSS bolts. This is the step that will save you much time and energy.

              3. Remove the two 10mm bolts that hold the VSS in. One of the bolts is also holding a bracket that the 3-pin cable hooks onto.

              4. Disconnect the 3-pin cable from the bracket and the cable that it plugs into.

              5. Remove the VSS and the little pin that sticks out the bottom (I don't know what it's called.)

              6. Put the new little pin into the hole on the tranny and install the VSS over it.

              7. Rebolt the VSS, transmission cables, and air intake. Reconnect battery.

              Hope this helps!

I think I was able to use sockets and extensions on all of these and didn't have to use any angled wrenches.

This comes up so often I wish I had taken pictures so I could just post a DIY and link to that..
