    electrical hiccup?

Tonight I was coming home from work on the interstate, crusing at a leisurely 80 MPH and all of a sudden ALL my electrial stuff shut off, and then came back on. Radio, lights, cluster, cruise control. I mean went off, the needles in the cluster started to return to 0. Then like I said, it all came back on after like 2 seconds. That has been like the 3rd time that has happened since Saturday. I can't think of why it would do that. Loose fuse or something? Help me out guys.

^^^do that...BUT dont OVERLOOK this.....check your Ig. switch....may be a ground...or it could be an EARLY warning of failure of Ignition switch...the metal points INSIDE the switch ( took old one apart ) ..starts to burn up..and flake away...if its OLD....and starts losing its connection for the continuity thats required to keep EVERYTHING running DURING operation..

so..YES..check the engine ground as mentioned by others..and as well..check your Ignition switch and Ignition fuse..make sure that 50A is SECURED and not loose!!

wish you the best in finding the problem!!

Notice any decrease in engine speed/power? Your alternator connection is coming loose. I'm POSITIVE on this one.

              LOL@loose fuse...

No, I do not notice any engine decrease when this happens, which makes me think the alternator is fine. Maybe it is a loose fuse.

I did just replace the ground off the valve cover and power steering pump, maybe the wire isn't thick enough? I used 12 guage wire.

                  12 gauge is tiny.

I'd use at least 8 gauge... 4 would even be better

Yeah..E....that happend to me...that 50A fuse was loose..and it lost power.....its not just loose alt. connection that can cause that!...if those fuse screws are loose...and from hitting potholes and bumps..can cause it to flicker..( EVERYTHING ).....it happend to me..thats why I stated that Eugene!!

I will check all those damn fuses in the morning.

                          The alternator connection is tight.

Checked all the fuses, they were good.

Went to Lowe's today, and they have all kinds of gauges of wire for like $0.75 per foot. I could have done that, but then I would have had to get something to crimp the stuff with.

So what I did was I went to Wal-Mart, back to the auto section, and found the battery cables, they had one marked for "Lawn and Garden", basically 19 inch 6ga wire, with slug ends already attached. Got home, popped the hood and replaced my previous 12ga wire with this 6ga stuff, and went out for a good 45 minute drive (the weather warranted it, cool and sunny) and it did not happen at all during that time.

But now I have a 6ga wire coming off my valve cover, is that overkill? I think the 12ga might be enough for it, but the power steering one is probably the one that needs to be 6ga.
