    Shift Lock

Whats up, sometimes, 50% of time, My car wont shift out of park when started. I try everything before having to resort to using the shift lock release. (applying parking brake, pumping brakes, etc).... First of all, what causes the lock to engage? Is there anyway to prevent it from engaging? When I find that it has been locked, I have to turn the car off, put the key in the shift lock, and shift in to neutral, and then start the car. It's a pain, what can i do?

Check if your P light is lit up on the dash when you start it and it won't shift out of park. If it isn't lit up then it is your shift position switch. Most likely it just needs cleaned or adjusted. It is at the base of the shifter under the center console on the driver's side of the shifter. It has a white plastic housing if that helps but you really can't miss it.

I have had this exact same problem before. Would definatly try that and if that doenst help then while you have the center console off spray some White Lithium Grease around the base of the shifter and follow the shifter down to where it is at its lowest point and spray there too. Be careful not to overspray. It is like spraying WD-40 on your steering wheel if you get some on your steering wheel. Friend of mine thought that would shine it up. LOL hit a parked car after he tried that. It shined but all the grip was worthless.

I would check the shift lock solenoid. If you take out the center console it is on the right side at the base of the shifter. When you press the brake and the car is in park it should click(you should hear it, or see it if you have the console out) releasing the shifter. When you put your key into the shiftlock in the console you bypass the lock this solenoid controls. If you open it up you'll find it no problem. This is just a guess but that would be the next thing I would check.
