    Alternator question

I have some questions regarding the alternator..First of, which other alternator can I use for my F22A1? I've heard that H22 alternator would fit on this motor...how about others? Like F22B1? Or H23A? Is the alt. for all H-series and F-series motors interchangeable with each other? I've tried searching, but couldn't come up with anything much..Sorry

The reason I'm asking this question is because..Well, my alt is going, and I jus wanna kno which alt I can use, in case I'm looking for used alts from other cars hehe..

Second question..Right now, my batt. light would come on and off..When the car's warm, and it's a hot day out, the batt light rarely comes on..But in the morning, or when it's not too hot out, it would come on and off, sometimes for quite a bit of time..When the batt light is on, my digicap would read 12.3 volts, and it'll keep on going down 'til the light is off..In normal condition, my cap is usually reading either 12.6-12.7V or 14.4-14.7V..

N e wayz, last question..Is it possible to just rebuild the alt? Maybe just replace the voltage regulator and/ or the brushes? Has anyone ever experienced the same problem and fixed it without getting a new alternator?

As usual, suggestions, advices and opinions will be highly appreciated..Thanks in advance guys

    Ronald

it turns out that you can use a h22a alt and the f22a,the difference is the h22 regulators is 14.9 volts and the f22 is 14.5 so they have same readings just voltage different.

i have an h22 alt on mine, ive been running the same alt and bracket for years. any F/H alty will work... be aware that the preludes had 6rib pulleys that were smaller... use the innermost ribs and leave the outside one empty. youll notice the accord belt is a bit loose when using the a lude alt, i stacked a half inch of washers (actually a big nut) under the small bracket thats on the tip of the alt bracket so it can make a bit more tension. i can get a pic if you need.

or just buy a belt thats 1" shorter.

Ronald_Type-R --- You might currently be at a place where a constant voltage reading hasn't been established: it's sorta not right, then it is, then it isn't, etc. It may be tough to diagnose that.

I recently had a low-voltage (12.2v at any RPM) situation and yeah the battery light was on. New brushes cured it, although it could have been something else.

In general, the OEM alternators "don't go bad", the brushes just wear out. In my case, the light wouldn't be on at first and then 10 minutes later it would, and stay on. Next day, same thing. Third day, always on.

At any rate it won't be worth your time to repair the alternator unless it's worn brushes. (I spent about $15-$20 with phatdoughnut's help; he mailed them to me because I couldn't find them locally.) Or if you Google you'll stumble on some, about $25 shipped or so.

But take it off and have your local auto parts store put it on their bench. If it fails the test, their equipment might be smart enough to say why. Also double-check your wiring; it could be something as simple as the harness or "batt" wire from the alternator is loose.

But beyond spending $25 or so ... STOP. It won't be economical to replace the regulator for example. The reason is because you can get junkyard OEM alternators for $50 or so shipped, and with less than 100K miles. Even so, they should hold up at least as well as a rebuilt one at the auto parts store.

In fact, that's what I did before getting the brushes, just in case. Now it sits in my garage, so if you need an alternator, and want an OEM one (albeit a little greasy and dirty) --- I have one that tested good at the auto parts store. I was told it came from a '91 (but the year doesn't matter) with about 75,xxx miles. Otherwise I'll make a proper FS thread here in a week or so when I get off my lazy ass.

Hope this doesn't confuse the issue, but here are the links to my recent threads about this:

If you're curious about the condition of your brushes, take a look at the pic in the second link. If they're that worn, compared to new, they're shot. And they aren't hard to get to, just remove the back of the alternator housing.

david is like the brush king. We took my friends crx alt apart( what a pain in the ass, sits behind the motor) and his brushes had literally shattered into pieces.
