how do i replace my internal bearings?

i really dont know what kind of bearings they are called but how do i replace the bearings in my engine becuase my engine is knocking now. im pretty mechanically inclined but i just cant picture what to do.... do i just drop the oil pan and go from there? or do i have to drop the entire block? can i get a step by step or something? thanks guys

You can technically replace bearings with the engine in the car... it will be much easier if the engine is removed.

There are the main bearings, which go between the crankshaft and the block. Then there are the rod bearings, which are where the connecting rods go around the crankshaft.

But to replace them, you will need to pull the engine, and then use plastigage on them. Plastigage is a small strand of wax material that you sandwhich between the bearings, and then how squished it is will tell you how much space is between the bearings.

When exactly do you have this "sound"?

If the sound is indeed the bearings, then there is a chance that you may have "spun" the bearings; meaning that they have worn and actually can spin when they are supposed to remain stationary. Also, with there being sounds already, the crank may have gotten worn, or gouged, and you could need a new one.

In the end, its probably going to be cheaper to find another engine to swap in since the damage is most likely already done.

could i replace both at the same time ( i know i could but i mean with the same stuff removed?) but i dunno which bearings they are...whichever ones would make my car knock pretty bad from 3000-4500rpms and my power has gone down pretty noticeably. which one would you say?

Can you replace the main bearings with the motor in the car? i didnt think you could.

rod bearings you can for sure.

do you ever get the oil light popping on? Where is the sound coming from?

And yes, you can replace them at the same time if you have the engine out. I forgot to say it above, but the main bearings will need the crank removed. And if you try to remove it while its in the car, you will still have the transmission and clutch/flywheel/ torque convertor on there, so it aint going anywhere.

Number 6 are the rod bearings
            # 9 are main bearings

I forgot to finish above.. but after you use the plastigage, and see what the clearances are, and make sure the crank is in good condition, or have it machined, then you will have to get bearings from HONDA (you dont wanna go cheap). There are like 6 different colors(sizes) that you would have to see what ones fit correctly.

Usually you can get what ones are supposed to be in there by either using the same color that was in there, or one bigger size if they are worn... In the end, its not an easy replacement.

nope the oil light is off and hasnt come on at all. this all happened last night... i was driving on the highway for about 30 minutes and everythihng was fine then i came to a stop at my exit and when i tried to take off it started knocking lightly my oil was fine and i changed it again today and nothing changed.... my power seems to have gone down a little bit the rpms dont rise quite as fast. i dunno what the deal is cause i wasnt racing or anything and my oil was fine. i did change to full synthetic for the first time 1 month ago and am still using it but i dont think that would do anything.

are you SURE its the bearings? and not something like piston slap, or even the valves.

check the oil, look for metal shavings. Make changing the bearings the last thing you try...

yeah.. try to see if you can narrow it down... rev it a little while you are under the hood. Has anything been done on it lately engine wise? (valve adjustment)

How many miles on the car?

edit: saw from your other thread that the oil had a glittery shine to it... thats prolly not a good sign.... usually the signature symptoms of a spun bearing.

nothing has been done to the car lately (except for the synthetic oil change). but nope nothing else. i do rev it under the hood and i hear it coming from the engine somewhere in there. its not really loud like ive heard a spun bearing before but its similar. i dunno what i can try adjusting before knwing for sure its the bearing? what else can i do

It's already been said, but check the oil for metal shavings of any kind. Shavings in oil = possible bearing/crank damage....no shavings = something else is wrong.
