    Help,I F'd Up!! Valve Adjustment Screw/Nut

So I did my valves last night and all was good. Today I get a loud ticking and pop the valve cover again. I lost a nut that holds the adjusting screw. I cannot find it anywhere up top and am thinking (hoping?) it went into the oil return passage way. FWIW, this was the exhaust side #1 cylinder and the valve closest to the outside of the engine.

If that is indeed what happened, the nut SHOULD just stay in the oil pan, correct?

Thoughts? issues? concerns? Replacement nut should be a Grade? (8?)

I'm so happy right now I could just sh!t.

oil passage to the pan is really the only place it can, unless I forgot about something.
It should just stay on the bottom, maybe come out at next oil change. I'd just get one out of a junk yard or Honda. I don't like home cheapo for nuts/bolts

Going to the "Pull Your Own" as soon as I leave work.

If I can get the DP off w/o too much trouble I'll pull the oil pan and replace the slowly leaking gasket and get some piece of mind if I find the nut in the pan.

          Wish me luck someone, please.

op gaskets cheap, id probably pull it if i were in your position.

so it unthreaded itself after the adjustment, while the car was running? did you forget to tighten it?

the loud ticking is probably a valve lash set way too wide... and as for the nut, who knows where it could have bounced around to, perhaps its in one of the corners of the head, where little pools of oil always sit. did you check every and any possible spot for it? if its not up top, it probably found its way down to the oil pan...

Yes, unthreaded itself AFTER the adjustment. While I DID NOT use a torque wrench ( I have 3 of them) I thought that I had tightened the nut well enough.

Yea, that valve was WAY loose w/o the nut there to hold the threaded adjuster tight. I looked EVERYWHERE, I even syringed as much oil as I could out of the upper valvetrain area in an attempt to locate the nut.

Pulling the oil pan and finding that nut will REALLY ease my mind.

                  Thanks CB7.

If the oil pan gasket is leaking and needs to be replaced anyway...I wouldn't hesitate to pull it off, retreive the nut, and throw on a new gasket.

Thanks for all the replies people.

Update: I dropped the oil pan, re-did the valves and searched EVERYWHERE for that nut. Didn't find it. I even had the wife out there w/ me, flashlights in hand. I just hope that nut is in a safe place.

As a side note to everyone here, don't ever buy my motor from me as long as it's still running.
