Anyone had front main seal problems?

My main seal at the crank shaft pully has failed miserably. This happened instantly sometime one morning when I started the car to warm it up. My question is, who has had this problem and what did they decide to do (ie. swap, rebuild, or just fix the seal). The car has 240,000 miles and it has always burned a little bit of oil probably through the valves or rings in some form or another.
I'm wondering if there may be some underlying problems that can cause a seal to suddenly fail. Would this problem and situation be worth considering a swap? Just want to see what you guys think.

      thats the rear main seal

gaskets do start leaking, i have never seen where one just starts pouring, after a while they just get hard and don't seal right, i would just go ahead and change the seal, and save for a swap or rebuild, also make sure the crankshaft is not scorred, or it will continue to leak

The front seals are bad about leaking on these motors. Just replace the cam seal, crank seal, and balance shaft seals the next time you replace the timing belt.
