    leaky drain plug

i have a dripping drain plug. it's a pretty steady drip. i've tried all different types of plugs (OEM too) and washers.

i finally went to an oversized 18mm plug, thinking that it was the threads on the pan. i thought that the new plug would create new threads, and stop the leak.

but, it didn't for some reason.

what i'm thinking, is that i may have overtightened the plug the last time that i changed my oil... and messed up the threads or somehow the pan got a little bent.

anyone have any suggestions other than replacing the entire oil pan?

Teflon tape. Wrap the threads in it. That's pretty much all I can say. If you need to rethread the pan though you will have to remove it from the car. It's not to bad just time consuming.

My oil plug has a small drip to, I just bought the washer ($.25) and a brand new oil pan gasket from the dealer because it's sweating a bit. I'm going to wait to my next oil change to change it because the drip isn't that bad and I don't want to waste that good OEM Honda oil I bought

Yeah, what we do probably three or four times a month on 3G and 4G Accords and Civics. We remove the pan and weld a nut on the inside of the pan that is the same size a standard plug threads. Then we match it up with a longer drain plug, and never have problem again... Except for the one dumbass that did his own oil change the next time and didn't use ANY washer. Tightened the plug down a bit too much and cracked the pan. Oh well... not our fault. Any way, we usually charge two hours labor and parts, comes out to about $170 for 4G Accords.b

What I did was get one of the fram quick change things, you put it in place of the old plug, and then you can put teflon or some temporary sealer on there, andnot have to worry about it, cuz you dont use that anymore, you just screw a hose onto that, and then the oil comes out. then just put a cap on it when you are done... costs maybe 10-15 at an auto store or walmart.

well, what i ended up doing... was... putting a much larger metal washer on the oversized drain plug i have... and, putting a custom rubber washer i made out of a bike inner tube in between the big metal washer and the plug/bolt.

then i just gave it a good tightening, and it seems to be holding well. no drips yet.

yea... but worth not having to pay an arm and a leg for a new oil pan from the dealership...

what i've done sorta stops the oil from dripping, even if it leaks down the threads. because even if it leaks down the threads (which i believe it was), it will stop at that huge washer/rubber washer and just sit there.

it's a good, easy, cost efficient solution.

dunno if aero3685 was talking about this...but wonder if someone makes an open/close valve to substitute for the oil drain plug. You know, like put teflon on the end that goes into the pain, then turn the knob clockwise on the valve...to close, CC to open for a quick & easy oil change.....like them quick brake bleeder screws...someone has to make them....if not I might
