    oil leaks

okay i drive a 95 accord ex 5spd with 160k miles.. its been 1000 miles since my oil change and i'm low 2 quarts.... i use pennzoil 5w30 conventional... i don'yt know where all this oil is going because.. i don't see any oil leaks on the ground...... my valve cover has leaks but it doesn't drip down onto the heads or onto the block.. i don't know if its the vtec that i've hit a couple times a day that eat it all up.. i don't know if its burning it cuz my car doesn't smoke at all..

i do see like a lil fluid on my tranny between the engine and the tranny theres if u wipe ur hand u feel the fluid but its not droppin on the ground.. is that the rear main seal?

    thanks let me know...

also what i notice is that is lil wet spot behind the timing cover.. what seals are under there.. but my ticks me off is that not is gettin on the grounds..

Possibly balancer shaft seal and rear main seal as you mention. Those can cause slow oil depletion if your not burning any. If you know for sure you arent burning your leaking somewhere.

when was it last that you had the timing belt and the water pump replaced?

from what i read in Haynes, you can leave the engine in to do the above mentioned things including the balance shaft seal. should you decide to replace that, invest in the retainer clip from Honda, it's only 10 bucks and will save you a head ache later down the line.

Still wet spots = Oil depletion some way or another. I would clean off the area with brake clean or something drive around and see if they start leaking again. If they do then those are your main areas of leakage. The balance shaft seal isnt hard. What is recommended is that you do your timing belt and water pump with it. The rear main seal (if you find that leaking) requires the removing of the transmission. Thats where my last leak on my old F was that was depleting my oil even though everything looked almost dry.

              chronology

bought CB@very low mileage 45,000 km
              stock engine F20a

oil changes at every 5,000km, 4 litres.

1st oil change, cheap oil (20w50 i think), and slow driving, no problem.

2nd oil change, cheap oil, at times harsh acceleration and driving up till 120km/h or more, noticed level drop (tip of dipstick only),... added in approx 1.5litres,... then everything's ok, meaning no level drop even in harsh driving.

3rd cheap oil change 4 litres, assuming there's more old oil in the engine,... yup we can see that it's abt. 5 to 5.5 litres of old oil being drained out.
Harsh driving,... level drop again to tip of dipstick.

Drained out that oil immediately and replaced with a better quality oil, 10w40 Castrol magnatec. Let's see what happens next. I'm still trying to diagnose.

A very experienced friend who specializes in honda cars actually advised against using low quality oil. He says the oil could not withstand the engine high temperature,... that's why. I couldnt notice whether there was emmission of greyish smoke from the exhaust.

              Any comments???

okay well today i check the dipset it had no freaking oil on dipset.. i'm like wtf than i start it up and shut it down.. still no oil.. i'm like wtf.. i went and added 1 quart of 5w30 and started it up.. ran it for like 10 secs. shut it down and my oil level was good... it was right on the 2 holes.. what the expletive.. okay now i think my rear main seal is where its leaking at.. i put the car on a lift.. and inbetween the tranny and engine u see like droplets of oil.. dark oil.. looks like black engine oil that was overdue for oil change thats how black it is.. so after 2k miles of oil change i lost a quart... i need help really. if it was the rear main seal wouldn't i see huge puddle. are their any seals on the timing belt side.. i think whats happen is that oil is drippin from the rear main seal.. and since theres wind.. its splashin it all under the car because that air is wet with oil. even the timing belt side...what are some seals on the timing belt side.. might replace them..

You wouldnt see a really big puddle unless it was a big leak. Usually you see it drip a bit around that area. Timing cover side you have the balancer shaft seal which is kinda notorious for leaking. Make sure its not your gasket first before rear main =D Sometimes it could be that side has a pinhole or something. But if thats dry and clear then I would do the rear main seal. Yes oil splashes all over the undercarriage if you have a slight leak, MY undercarriage is covered in a layer of oil. Its my version of rust proofing lol.

I dont think its the balance shaft seal although it could be mines out and it just pisses out oil but mine could be worse that urs who knows

Could be main seal....check your oil pan gasket too because an oil pan leak only occurs when your engine is running and then it is usually only "weeping." Once you shut down the car, all the oil drips into the pan and it won't leak because the oil level is now below the gasket. You can also run a die through the engine and order to see where its coming from.

Check your your valves also, most oil depletion happens when there are worn valve guide seals

I did some research for you and myself....if it is your rear main seal leaking, there is a quick until to get it replaced....if you put approx. a 1/4 of pint of bottle of ATF in in your oil will stop or reduce the oil leak...reason being is that ATF and brake fluid swells seals/rubbers. The rear main seal leaks mainly because it gets crystalized and cracks so the ATF will swell it back to fill up the now new gap. Dont put more than waht I recommend because it will swell too much and distort the seal and end up losing more oil. You can do this at your own risk, i'm just passing on info I aquired from my teacher. Also if anyone has a slipping auto tranny to can pour 1/2 of a small bottle of brake fluid in the tranny which will have the same effect on the seals and stop the slipping.
