    Stuck head bolt

Well at this moment I am trying to get one of my head bolts out. It is basically the only one left on the head kinda ***. I already tried a breaker bar/impact gun on it both didnt work too well. Head is a bit rounded but not too bad. Dont want to put another socket on there and risk rounding it off. Anyone got any ideas? It was suggested by a friend to use pb blaster but the threads are quite a ways down and I doubt it will make it. If someone has any ideas plz lmk right away. Thanks.

are you using a 12-point or a 6-point socket? not much that will help besides more torque. 18" breaker bar, a 6-point, 1/2" drive socket, and as much force as you can muster...

6 point/1/2 drive/pipe. I guess I need a bigger pipe I just need someone to support it on the bolt and have someone hold the motor from sliding around. Guess thats the only way. But yea I am using six points and such. Whats being *** is that it will slowly slide off and slowly round off the bolt kinda ***. I will do that tomorrow and see whats up. Thanks mike.

dont let it slide off!!! have somebody with a second pair of hands holding the socket/extension straight. with a long pipe, its VERY easy to let it start tipping over and stripping the bolt.

and is this a motor you have, outside of the car? its very hard to separate old F22 head bolts on a loose block, it just slides around. i usually tip it over on its face/back so it has nowhere to move, and crack the bolts loose.

Yessir this is my old A6 I am tearing apart. Yea its resting on a tire I have my friend hold it and I break it and we take turns lol. Yea we tried the tipping method a bit hard but yea that didnt go too well socket slid off and rounded it a bit. im thinkin bout just putting it on the engine stand and just tearing it off like that. The rest I could get off no problems. But these last two. Got one off with the help of my friend dad holding block and then the remaining bolt decides to become a bitch. Plus its on the floor so a little harder to get leverage. Guess bolt two or three back in and hoist it onto the stand tomorrow. Thanks for the advice though man.

I just went through this with a f22, one of the bolts didnt want to co-operate, sure enough it was the first one I attempted, After that I learned the meaning of a lever. Make sure you have a solid pipe at least 4 ft in length, good luck, also make sure they are not deep dish sockets.

Nah not deep dish shortest one I could find with an extension, breaker bar, and pipe. Saw my breaker bar flexing lol usually not a great thing with a pipe. Ill use a longer one tomorrow I know my friend has a bigger one around in his shop. Thanks for the info tho man!

I watched Patrick pull the head off an F22 at the east coast meet last year. Pretty sure he did it with the motor in the same position as it is here. With probably a 24'' breaker bar, and a lot of muscle.

we got the headstuds off of my f22b when it was sitting on the crate in my garage.
i don't know what to tell you about rounding them off though...that's scary....

impact gun sometimes does better since it's not constantly putting pressure on the bolt head and rounding off, short harsh bursts work well....same thing goes for working on most stuff like the crank pulley, i had to kick the shit out of the breaker bar to get it to jar loose finally. i swear kicking a bolt loose has never failed me haha.

FYI, for future start off using the 6-pt 1/2" drive with breaker bar and keep it flat as you turn. If you need more force, get more leverage but keep it flat. You obviously did not do this as it is rounded off or your socket is worn and needs to be replaced. Anyhow, also cylinder heads should be removed evenly to not warp the aluminum head. This is meant to help in future, so don't take it harsh.

Anyhow, you either have a worn 6pt socket with rounded corners and need to get a fresh one and try again OR you can buy a set (Craftsman sells them) of nut/bolt removers. They are socket-like, but have a swirl design inside with jagged edges that dig into the head of the bolt or a nut and it's design to remove rounded off or rusted up fasteners, works like a charm.

I agree with you on the PB blaster being useless if you can't reach the threads.

Don't attempt half-ass ideas at this point, go with the best you can come up with and implement in your situation. The more you mess it up, the harder it will be.

If you MUST use an impact gun on a head (I personally would not), then what I've found helps on stubborn bolts is put the gun on CLOCKWISE (TIGHTEN) mode and hit it a few times to break it free, then put it back in CCW (LOOSEN) mode and it comes out. It works sometimes, I just did it not long ago on a crank pulley bolt.

Sounds like a great way to round off bolts/nuts, key is to keep it flat on the bolt head or nut, this would not do that. on that idea IMO, especially because it's already rounded off somewhat.

^ This is what I meant by, not attempting half-ass ideas, it will just make it harder.

dont know if u can do this but have u tried heating it with a torch? not sure if u should do it or not but thats what i've used for stubborn nuts and bolts on my car and at work.
