    Engine troubles while running

Lately my car has been giving me some engine problems. I know its old and it has a lot of mileage on it (210k) but it didn't have ANY problems until very recently. The other day when I was driving i stopped at a light and realized it was idling lower than usual, around 600 or so and fluxuating lightly (not like a vacuum leak though). All of a sudden it dropped dramatically and caused the car to stall. I started it back up just fine and started going again and it seemed ok but then a little bit later when I went to accelerate slowly, I shifted into second, let off the clutch and pushed the gas and it did nothing. RPM started to drop again and the throttle had no effect, so I pressed the clutch again and stepped on the gas and it revved fine so I let go of the clutch again and it was fine the rest of the way back. Today it did the same sort of thing. I was driving and it started to sputter, like the throttle didn't completely work but it was at least trying. Then it stopped all together again like before, but never permanantly.

Since that was so long here is a short summary of what it's doing:
    1. low idle sometimes causing engine to stall if no gas is applied while not moving
    2. while driving, throttle does nothing or sputters occasionally
    3. all symptoms are sporatic

Does anyone know what could be wrong?

I checked my spark plugs today and they were covered in oil, but the VC gasket should be good. That should explain the sputtering and possibly the stalling but I cleaned them up and put them back in and it kept doing it, not quite as bad though, and it did seem to fix the idle.

was it cylinder number 2's spark plug that had oil in it?

probably a tube seal or the rocker arm seal but doing those will require a new VC gasket...

Cylinder 2 was the worst but they all had oil on them, and they didn't a couple weeks ago. The thing is, I need to be able to drive my car 100 miles next week when I go home for the summer and I don't want to get stuck anywhere, and I don't know how to change the rocker arm seal if that's the problem. I still don't know if the oil is what is causing the problem though.
