Splash guard is all it is. few of them rubber screw clips pop them off with a flat head and you fine to go. Theres also ones in the fender you can take off but i think dirt and stuff from driving will fly up into the engine bay

Keep some covering on the Pulley/Belt area though...
When my car got stolen the thieves warped my splashguards which could no longer be bolted to the chassis (and dragged on the ground). So I had to remove it. But before removing completely, I cut the guard off, leaving a section intact right under the Timing/Alt/PS/AC belt pulleys. Since those pulleys are the only exposed moving parts of the engine, I rather spare them from as much foreign debris as possible, if not, at least, to spare the belts from getting wet and SQUEALING when you hit a puddle or something.
So my suggestion is at least keep some covering around the pulley area.

I can confirm this exact thing happens ifyou don't have the splash guard and it rains. I kept hearing random squeals and I remembered that I don't recall ever taking it off of my car when I was working on it, so it is probably missing.My '91 LX build. Bought September 2017. Sold June 2020.
